American University of Antigua (AUA) is a private for-profit international medical school located in Antigua and Barbuda.
AUA was co-founded by Neal S. Simon, [1] a lawyer and former president of Ross University [ citation needed ]. AUA began instruction in 2002. [2] In 2008, Bengaluru-based Manipal Education and Medical Group (MEMG) purchased the college from New York-based Greater Caribbean Learning Resources, Inc. and formed Manipal Education Americas, LLC. [3] [4] In 2006, AUA College of Medicine was approved by the New York State Education Department [5] and, in 2011, recognized by the Medical Board of California. [6]
AUA is also recognized by the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Medicine, and is one of the few international medical schools whose graduates are not required to demonstrate substantial equivalence to receive medical licensure in the state of Massachusetts. [7]
AUA is fully accredited by the Caribbean Accreditation Authority for Education in Medicine and other Health Professions (CAAM-HP) [8] and is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools. [9] [10]
In 2011, Medical Board Of California recognized American University of Antigua College of Medicine. [11] AUA is approved by the New York State Education Department (NYSED) [12] to allow students to complete more than 12 weeks of clinical clerkships in New York State. AUA is one of eight Caribbean medical schools so approved by NYSED. [12]
In 2015, access to the Federal Direct Student Loan Program was granted to American students at AUA. [13]
AUA requires a minimum of 90 credits of college courses. Although MCAT scores are required for US citizens and permanent residents, they are not considered in AUA's admissions decisions; opting for a holistic approach to evaluating students instead. [14]
The American University of Antigua was ranked in the top tier of medical schools in the Caribbean by the World Scholarship Forum in 2020, [15] and by Money Inc. in 2019. [16]
AUA follows an organ system-based block curriculum in small group settings, modeled after recent medical learning developments in US medical schools. [17] The organ-based curriculum allows students to better understand the anatomy and histology of each organ and system, and how they function together as opposed to isolated subjects. [18]
AUA awards a Doctor of Medicine recognized with eligibility to practice in all 50 States in the U.S., Canada, and the United Kingdom. [19]
According to the US Department of Education, 68.68% of students (125 out of 182) completed the program on time in 2022. [20]

The US Department of Education reports median student loan debt of Americans who attended was $311,448 in 2022. Default rate as of 2019 was 0.3%. [20]
In 2013, AUA signed an affiliation agreement with the Florida International University Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine that allows AUA clinical students to complete all of their core clinical rotations in the Greater Miami Area. [22]
In 2019, AUA College of Medicine signed an inaugural transfer agreement with Warwick Medical School, allowing high achieving students the opportunity to transfer to the University of Warwick's medical school to finish their MD after completing their basic sciences at AUA. [23]
In 2020, AUA signed an affiliation agreement with the Florida International University Robert Stempel College of Public Health and Social Work that provides AUA students and graduates with priority admission to FIU for a Master's in Public Health (MPH) degree. [24]
Dr. Seymour L. Schwartz was a renowned surgeon, Alumni Professor for the Department of Surgery at the University of Rochester, and co-author and editor-in-chief of Schwartz's Principles of Surgery. [25] He is considered as one of the most honored and influential surgeons in American history as a pioneer in surgery, surgical education and leadership. Dr. Schwartz was appointed as University Provost and Chief Academic Officer of the American University of Antigua.[ citation needed ]
Dr. Darrick E. Antell is a plastic surgeon and reconstructive surgeon whose research has been featured in the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History. [26] Dr. Antell was appointed as a clinical faculty member and guest lecturer at the American University of Antigua. [27]

Medical University of the Americas (MUA) is a private for-profit offshore medical school in Charlestown, Nevis. It is owned by R3 Education, Inc. which also owns St. Matthew's University and Saba University School of Medicine MUA confers upon its graduates the Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree.

Its main basic science campus is located in Sint Maarten, and administrative offices are located in Miramar, Florida, in the United States. AUC is owned by Adtalem Global Education. The executive dean of AUC manages the medical school from offices in Miramar, Florida.
Saba University School of Medicine is a private for-profit offshore medical school located on Saba, a special municipality of the Netherlands in the Caribbean. Saba University confers upon its graduates the Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree. It is owned by R3 Education, Inc. Devens, Massachusetts which also owns St. Matthew's University and the Medical University of the Americas
The Kasturba Medical College International Center (KMCIC) was the Manipal, India campus of American University of Antigua College of Medicine. The college was forged with an agreement between Manipal University and the American University of Antigua College of Medicine. KMCIC was established in October 2005, with a focus to train undergraduate and graduate students in the Basic Sciences of the medical curriculum in preparation for the USMLE Step 1 Examinations. KMCIC functions as a distinct college of Manipal University, with its own administrative body led by Dean Poornima Baliga. It started to phase out students from its campus in Manipal and relocate them to AUA's Pre-Medical and Basic Science campus in Antigua in 2011. As of 2015, no students are currently enrolled at KMCIC's Manipal campus. AUA has since then dissolved that campus after receiving California site selection approval among other states as AUA site is highly favorable among many states for placement of students. Manipal campus in its entirety is left with only secretarial and administrative staff on hand in Manipal serving to provide former students transcripts and paperwork where needed.
Ross University School of Medicine (RUSM) is a private, for-profit medical school. Its main campus is in Barbados, and its administrative offices are in Miramar, Florida. Until 2019, the university's main campus was in Portsmouth, Dominica. RUSM is owned by Adtalem Global Education Inc.
Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine is a medical degree conferred by the 38 osteopathic medical schools in the United States. DO and Doctor of Medicine (MD) degrees are equivalent: a DO graduate may become licensed as a physician or surgeon and thus have full medical and surgical practicing rights in all 50 US states. Atlantic University School of Medicine (AUSOM) was an offshore private medical school, located in St. Lucia from its foundation in 2010 until August 2017 and then for 5 months in St. John's, Antigua and Barbuda until December 2017, when it fully closed.

Darrick E. Antell, MD, F.A.C.S. is an American scientist, researcher, educator and plastic and reconstructive surgeon. As of 2024, he is Assistant Clinical Professor of Surgery at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. He was the first in his field to use twins to document how faces can be affected by environmental factors like sun, stress, and smoking.
