Named Camp Greene, after the Revolutionary War hero, Nathanael Greene. the camp was established at Charlotte, North Carolina in 1917. At that time, the population of Charlotte was approaching its 1920 total of 46,000, [1] and so was roughly equivalent to the 40,000 soldiers who trained at Camp Greene.

Camp Butner was a United States Army installation in Butner, North Carolina during World War II. It was named after Army general and North Carolina native Henry W. Butner. Part of it was used as a POW camp for German prisoners of war in the United States and this site eventually became the Federal Correctional Complex, Butner. The camp site was chosen in the late summer of 1941 to have a major training area, built with construction starting in January 1942. In just 6 short months, over 1,700 buildings were constructed. There were enough beds in the enlisted barracks alone to accommodate over 35,000 soldiers.

He was most recognized for his 1903–1905 work with the Corps of Engineers to lead the building of the Benguet Road, a mountain highway in the Philippines linking Rosario, La Union and the lowland areas to Baguio. During World War I, he commanded the military training facility at Camp Greene, North Carolina; the 171st Infantry, Brigade, Camp Grant, Illinois, and then the 86th Division, Camp Grant, Illinois.
The 108th Training Command is a United States Army Reserve unit headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina. At its activation, the unit was designated as the 108th Airborne Division, but in 1952 was redesignated the 108th Infantry Division. In 1956, the division was again reorganized, this time to the designation as the 108th Division. Under the U.S. Army Reserve Transformation of 2005, the 108th was reorganized to is current structure as the 108th Training Command. The command is currently one of the largest in the Army Reserve, commanding and coordinating 9,000 soldiers.

Douglass Taft Greene was a major general in the United States Army during World War II. He served as commanding general of the 16th Armored Division and the 12th Armored Division during their training in the United States. Despite being an officer during both World War I and World War II, he never held a combat command, and was assigned to active duty positions within the continental United States during both wars.
