Canaan Mdletshe is a South African politician who was a Member of the National Assembly of South Africa from April until May 2024,representing the National Freedom Party (NFP),of which he served as secretary-general. [1] [2]
Mdletshe was not included on any NFP candidate lists for the 2024 general election and left parliament as a result. [3]
In June 2024,after the NFP joined the Government of Provincial Unity in the aftermath of the 2024 KwaZulu-Natal provincial election,Mdletshe resigned from the party. [4]
In August 2024,Mdletshe joined MK. [5]
The Inkatha Freedom Party is a conservative political party in South Africa,which is a part of the current South African government of national unity together with the African National Congress (ANC). Although registered as a national party,it has had only minor electoral success outside its home province of KwaZulu-Natal. Mangosuthu Buthelezi,who served as chief minister of KwaZulu during the Apartheid period,founded the party in 1975 and led it until 2019. He was succeeded as party president in 2019 by Velenkosini Hlabisa.

Ivan Barnes is the leader of the National Freedom Party,and its leading candidate on the national list,for the 2024 general election. He was elected president of the party on 17 December 2023,in an election that was disputed by the party's National Executive Committee. His election was later recognised by the Independent Electoral Commission. His stint as party president has been marred by infighting. He struggled not only with the former secretary general Canaan Mdletshe,but also with Teddy Thwala,who was elected secretary-general of the party with him. Barnes later suspended fifteen party leaders,but the decision was suspended by the courts in July 2024.
The 2024 KwaZulu-Natal provincial election was held on 29 May 2024,concurrently with the 2024 South African general election,to elect the 80 members of the 7th KwaZulu-Natal Legislature. The new MK party flipped KwaZulu Natal from the ANC,earning 37 out of 80 seats to gain a plurality. Conversely,the ANC itself plummeted to the third place,losing its majority in the legislature for the first time since 2004.
