The Canadian Injured Workers Alliance (CIWA) is a Canadian charity and advocacy organization for injured workers and occupational rehabilitation. [4] Active in providing training, educational resources, and advocacy both federally and provincially, it is based on a national network of injured workers groups whose aim is to support injured workers and improve the occupational health and safety of workers across Canada. The organization was founded in 1990 by Steve Mantis and other injured workers advocates including Wolfgang Zimmermann, after they organized a "National Conference on Re-Employment of Injured Workers" in Ottawa in June 1990. [5] The conference passed a resolution to form a national organization representing a national network of injured worker organizations, ultimately to become CIWA. [6]

The trade-off between assured, limited coverage and lack of recourse outside the worker compensation system is known as "the compensation bargain.” One of the problems that the compensation bargain solved is the problem of employers becoming insolvent as a result of high damage awards. The system of collective liability was created to prevent that and thus to ensure security of compensation to the workers.

The Canadian Society of Safety Engineering is a Canadian association which promotes accident prevention. It was founded in 1949 by a small group of individuals drawn together in the common cause of accident prevention. It grew from a provincially based organization to become a large professional organization for health and safety practitioners.
German Statutory Accident Insurance or workers' compensation is among the oldest branches of German social insurance. Occupational accident insurance was established in Germany by statute in 1884. It is now a national, compulsory program that insures workers for injuries or illness incurred through their employment, or the commute to or from their employment. Wage earners, apprentices, family helpers and students including children in kindergarten are covered by this program. Almost all self-employed persons can voluntarily become insured. The German workers' compensation laws were the first of their kind.
The WorkCover Authority of New South Wales was a New South Wales Government agency established in 1989. The agency created regulations to promote productive, healthy and safe workplaces for workers and employers in New South Wales. Stephen Arthur "Steve" Mantis is a Canadian advocate for injured workers and people with disabilities. Best known for years of volunteer efforts to build a "fair and comprehensive" system for workers injured on the job, Mantis organized injured worker self-help groups locally in Thunder Bay, then regionally in Northwestern Ontario by co-founding the Ontario Network of Injured Workers Groups and nationally by co-founding the Canadian Injured Workers Alliance. Mantis was appointed to the Board of Directors of the Ontario Workers Compensation Board from 1991 to 1994.

The Elliot Lake Miners Strike was a wildcat strike by approximately 1,000 uranium miners who worked at Denison uranium mine in the Elliot Lake area of Ontario, Canada. The strike was the first time that Canadian workers had taken industrial action over safety concerns, and it led to Ontario Premier Bill Davis creating a royal commission which led to the creation of new health and safety legislation.
