Canalside Studios is a games company within the University of Huddersfield in West Yorkshire, England. The studio is permanently staffed by a core team of 8 placement students. [1] Plans are in place for full-time students studying games-oriented courses to contribute content through projects to get their name in the credits.

History

It was founded in 2006 [2] to aid the professional development of computer games students and help them find employment within the industry.

In 2007 Canalside Studios achieved second place in the Microsoft Microsoft XNA Dream Build Play competition with Yo-Ho Kablammo. [3] The game was released on 12 September 2009 on Xbox Live Arcade and received excellent reviews from the arcade community.[ citation needed ]

Subsequent to Yo-Ho Kablammo, Canalside Studios has released a B movie themed shooter called Missing Reel for Xbox Live Indie Games. [4] [5]

Canalside Studios was contracted by the Royal Armouries to produce educational games for display at their museum in Leeds and has also developed two games for display at the Frazier History Museum, Kentucky. [6] [7]

Descentium is the title currently in development.

Xbox Live Arcade was a video game digital distribution service that was available for the Xbox and Xbox 360 consoles. It focused on smaller downloadable games from both major publishers and independent game developers. Titles on the service ranged from previously released arcade and console games to brand new games designed for the service, and were priced from a range of 5 to 20 US dollars. While originally requiring a disc to gain access to the service on the original Xbox, the Arcade was integrated into the Xbox 360 along with the rest of the Xbox Live Marketplace with the launch of the new console.

'Splosion Man is a 2.5D action platform video game developed by Twisted Pixel Games for the Xbox 360, available through the Xbox Live Arcade digital download service. Players control 'Splosion Man, an escaped science experiment with the ability to explode himself repeatedly, as he works his way through obstacles and traps trying to exit the fictional laboratory known as Big Science.

It was subsequently ported by Humble Hearts for Windows in May 24, 2013, for Linux and OS X in December 17, 2013, and for PlayStation 4 in October 2014. Solar 2 is an open world sandbox video game developed by Australian developer Jay Watts' video game studio, Murudai. The game was developed with Microsoft's XNA tools, and its development was inspired by indie games such as flOw. Dream Build Play is an annual $75,000 Microsoft video game contest used to promote Microsoft XNA Game Studio and eventually Xbox LIVE Indie Games. It was announced in 2006, started in 2007, and ran until 2012. In 2008 and 2009 it spanned over 100 countries and in 2010 it spanned 110 countries. It was restarted in 2017 as the Dream.Build.Play 2017 Challenge. Notable winners include Dust: An Elysian Tail and The Dishwasher: Dead Samurai.
