Canvas Outdoor Museum Show is an annual craftsmanship event held in Florida. The show's mission is to bring the works of international artists to public spaces, allowing the artists a platform to create site-specific installations on public infrastructure.

Contents

The show was created by West Palm Beach gallery owner Nicole Henry of Nicole Henry Fine Art, and serves as a public platform for visual artists in the genres of contemporary art, mural art, street art, public art, video art and site-specific installation art. The event is held during the second week of November in Downtown West Palm Beach, Florida. [1] [2]


Artists

Each show features 18 to 20 rising and established artists from around the world as well as a Local Showdown in which local artists complete to be in the next show's lineup.

The November 2015 inaugural show presented [3] a lineup of 20 artists that came from the United States, Argentina, Brazil, Belgium, United Kingdom, Germany and Puerto Rico, including: 2Alas, [4] Bik-Ismo, CASE Maclaim, Cheryl Maeder, Greg Mike, Herakut, Jean-Luc Moerman, Jeremy Penn, José Bedia Valdés, Kai, Katja Loher, Kobra, Pastel, Registered Artists, Michael Dweck, Ron English, Sean Yoro (aka HULA), [5] WRDSMTH, and ZEUS. Over 18 site-specific installations and large-scale murals were created around Downtown, West Palm Beach on select buildings and infrastructure in various locations, including the City Hall Courtyard, Royal Park Bridge, Fern Street, and The Whitney. [8]

The 2015 CANVAS Local Showdown was held in Northwood Village, where seven local artists competed to be on the 2016 CANVAS lineup. Artist Amanda Valdes won the competition by popular public vote on the CANVAS app. [9]

In 2016, the show expanded to include nearby Lake Worth, and the artists included Amanda Valdez, Astro, Case Maclaim, Greg Mike, Griffin Loop, HEC One Love, Hoxxoh, HULA, Hybycozo, Laura Kimpton, Lonac, Lori Pratico, Pichiavo, Pipsqueak Was Here!!!, Sipros, WRDSMTH, and ZEUS. The nations represented were the UK, the US, Brazil, The Netherlands, Spain, Croatia, Germany, and France. [10]

The 2017 show also included both West Palm Beach and Lake Worth, and several of the artists’ work in previous shows was so highly regarded they were invited back. Newcomers include Cyrcle, D*Face, Jennifer Chaparro (winner of the Local Showdown), Kobra, and Okuda. [11] [12]

Charity

In August 2015, a board of directors was formed to establish CANVAS Art Charities, a official not-for-profit 501(c)(3). The charity funds and curates year-round programming and events to support art in public spaces. Artist Dean Zeus Coleman won the artist residency where he will create an installation in Downtown Abacoa in Jupiter, Florida. [13] [14]

Alex Brewer, also known as HENSE, is an American contemporary artist, best known for his dynamic, vivid and colorful abstract paintings and monumental wall pieces. He has been active since the 1990s. In 2002 he began accepting commissions for artwork and over the course of the last decade has established a solid reputation as a commissioned artist, having appeared in several solo and group shows.

The Life Cube Project is a community interactive art installation based upon the creator's idea that if you write something down, it is far more likely to happen. The Life Cube installation encourages members of the community and the general public to decorate it with inspirational writing, paintings, drawings, murals, and tapestries for all its visitors to see. Through four iterations at the annual Burning Man festival in 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2015; hundreds of thousands of participants touched, climbed, inscribed, painted, and added their personal visions to the Life Cube. In 2014, the Life Cube Project made its way out of Burning Man and into its first major city in the United States as experiential and interactive art.

Nicole Henry Fine Art is a West Palm Beach gallery specializing in emerging art markets including Cuban and Street Art to secondary works from Pre-Columbian, Old Masters, Impressionists, Modern, Contemporary, Latin American, European, and American Art. The Gallery was founded by art dealer Nicole Henry in 2006.

Tristan Eaton is an American artist. Primarily known for his toy designs and street art murals, Eaton is also a graphic designer and illustrator. In total, Eaton has painted about 100 murals around the world.

Mel Tanner was an American light sculptor, painter, installation artist, and videographer. His wife, Dorothy Tanner, was an American light sculptor, installation artist, musician, videographer, and spoken word artist based in Denver, Colorado. The couple worked very closely for over 40 years. Their main project was the creation of Lumonics that consists of their light sculptures, live projection, video, electronics, and music as a total art installation. Author and art historian, Michael Betancourt, described this visual music performance work as a Gesamtkunstwerk in his book, The Lumonics Theater: The Art of Mel & Dorothy Tanner, published in 2004.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Hall Art Foundation</span> Art Museum

The Hall Art Foundation is an organization, founded in 2007 by Andrew Hall and Christine Hall, which oversees two contemporary art museums, one in Vermont and one in Germany, named Kunstmuseum Schloss Derneburg. There is also a permanent installation of Anselm Kiefer's work at MASS MoCA supported by the Hall Art Foundation. The museums in Vermont and Germany serve to exhibit some portion of Hall's 5,000-piece art collection. The Foundation and its efforts have been compared to Glenstone, another private museum.

Elizabeth Thompson was an American painter whose works have been described by writer and art historian Bonnie Clearwater as "a call to action for the reclamation of Paradise". She has painted the Florida Everglades as "de-peopled visions of a primordial Eden." Thompson lived in Florida and New York City.
