The Day of the Capital City of Kazakhstan is an official public holiday in Kazakhstan. It was established in 2009 and is celebrated on July 6 to celebrate the capital city of Kazakhstan, Astana (formerly known as Nur-Sultan). The holiday also coincides with the birthday of ex-President Nursultan Nazarbayev.

Background

On 6 July 1994, the Supreme Council of Kazakhstan adopted a resolution to transfer the capital of Kazakhstan from Almaty to Akmola. [1] On 6 May 1998, Akmola was renamed to Astana and gained status as the capital city. [2] On 18 July 2008, the government approved a bill making Capital Day a state holiday.

Celebrations

On Capital City Day in 2005, Jastar Park on Dóńgelek Square was unveiled. [3]

The day will end with fireworks over Yessil River embankment, as well as a city park. [4] [5]

The 2020 celebrations coincided with the 80th birthday of Nursultan Nazarbayev. The celebratory events were held virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic in the country. [6]

Music festivals

Since 2009, the most famous brass bands in the country and around the world perform at the Astana Samaly International Festival. A military tattoo known as the Eskeri Kernei ("Military Trumpet") International Festival is held on Capital City Day, held annually since 2012 under the auspices and support of the Nur-Sultan Mayor’s Office. [7] It exists with the participation of military bands in the Military Band Service such as the Presidential Band of the State Security Service and foreign bands such as the Band of the Armed Forces of Mongolia and the Brass Band of the Government of Tuva. Astana is the capital of Kazakhstan. Founded as Akmoly, it was once the seat of an okrug of the Russian Empire from 1830, it was granted town status and the name was modified to Akmolinsk in 1832. Although damaged during revolts in 1838, Akmolinsk continued to be a center of Russian colonial administration and to grow over the course of the 19th century.

The Tasmagambetov Cabinet was the 5th government of Kazakhstan. Led by Prime Minister Imangali Tasmagambetov, it was formed on 28 January 2002 after his predecessor Kassym-Jomart Tokayev stepped down from his post along with his entire cabinet. President Nursultan Nazarbayev nominated Tasmagmabetov for office to which it was unanimously approved by the Parliament. Prior to that, Tasmagambetov served as the Deputy PM under Tokayev's cabinet. Military Courts of the Republic of Kazakhstan are the specialized courts of the Armed Forces of Kazakhstan that deal with criminal cases concerning military personnel and the civilian personnel of the Ministry of Defence. The military courts are part of the judiciary of Kazakhstan. It is often noted as a common criticism that military courts generally have more connection to the government than other courts by virtue of going through the military hierarchy, which has been seen as a threat to judicial independence. Military courts consider civil cases by active servicemen or citizens who undergo military training against their will, among other things.

The Astana City Mäslihat is a unicameral legislature of Kazakhstan’s capital city of Astana. The councillors of the City Mäslihat are elected concurrently with the MP's of the Mazhilis. <span class="mw-page-title-main">Special forces of Kazakhstan</span>

The Special Forces of Kazakhstan trace their history to the Soviet era spetsnaz units operating on the territory of the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic within the USSR. These units are the remnants of the former Soviet Army, KGB, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and GRU. Similarly to other post-Soviet states, Kazakhstan's special forces fall under the control of the Armed Forces of the Republic, the Ministry of Interior, and under the National Security Committee. Special Forces Day is officially celebrated on June 9, in honor of the signing by the President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev of the decision on the formation of the Coordinating Council of Special Purpose Units of State Agencies under the Security Council.
