Capri Records Ltd. is a jazz record label founded by record collector, photographer, and recording engineer Thomas C. Burns. [1] Burns formed the Capri label [2] following his Record Revival store [3] which is now known as Jazz Record Revival, along with his future Tapestry Records [4] label. The Colorado-based Capri Records has a catalog of more than one hundred titles by musicians such as bassists Ray Brown and Red Mitchell, trombonists Al Grey and Phil Wilson, saxophonist Bud Shank and drummer Louie Bellson.
Thomas C. Burns founded Capri Records in Denver, Colorado in 1984 while concentrating on musicians with ties to Colorado. Capri Records began producing [5] albums with locally linked musicians such as Fred Hess, Ron Miles, [6] Spike Robinson, Keith Oxman, [7] [8] and Ellyn Rucker. [9]
Burns' [10] Capri Records also released albums with many more artists outside of Colorado including musicians Ray Brown, [11] Ron Miles, [12] [13] Jimmy Rowles [14] and Mike Jones. [15]
From 1987 through the early 1990s, Burns produced albums [16] receiving multiple honors and awards. [17] The Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra [18] received a Grammy Award nomination [19] for their album Groove Shop [20] and also received two Golden Feather Awards. [21]
In 2013 Jeff Hamilton [22] and his trio recorded an album with actor Wilford Brimley; [23] [24] Gary Smulyan [25] wanted to make a recording of Neapolitan melodies with actor and singer Dominic Chianese, [26] who was known for his vocal treatments of classic Italian tunes. Ali Ryerson (participated with Holly Hofmann [27] and Frank Wess in the 2006 [28] album Flutology [29] ) approached Tom Burns with the idea of an all-flute [30] big band and recorded Game Changer.
