Carlo Ferrario (7 September 1833, Milan - 11 May 1907, Milan) was an Italian scenic designer, painter, and architect.
He was born to Giuseppe Ferrario, a blacksmith, and his wife Francesca née Basulli. While still a boy, he was forced to quit school and find work. One of his jobs was tending the shop for a local decorator. Already interested in the theater, this inspired him to copy the curtains and draperies he saw there. In 1852, he enrolled in the night courses at the Brera Academy, where he studied under the guidance of Enrico Robecchi (1827-1889). The following year, he was hired at La Scala, as an assistant to the stage manager. [1]
In 1859 Luigi Bisi, professor of perspective at the academy, called him to serve as an adjunct there. [2] He was named co-director at La Scala in 1867 and, the following year, became the Director of scenography. During this period he created curtains for several theaters in Milan. In 1878, he also provided stage settings for the opera Salvator Rosa , at the Teatro Argentina in Rome. [1]
Due to disagreements with the theater's management company, over the necessity of a technical laboratory for designers, he left La Scala in 1881 and went to the Teatro Carcano. There, he worked without an assistant and often collaborated at other theaters, including the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples. He returned to La Scala in 1887, at the request of Giuseppe Verdi, who wanted him to produce the settings for Otello . [1] This led to his reinstatement and a new laboratory. During the 1890s, he worked with Verdi on two more premieres, Falstaff and Rigoletto , as well as the Italian premieres of works by Wagner.
Approximately 600 drawings and sketches of his designs are preserved at the La Scala Museum. Many others may be found at the Casa Ricordi publishing house and in private collections, including the Donald Oenslager collection in New York.
In addition to his theater work, he painted landscapes and architectural interior scenes, in oil and watercolors. These included six panels for the new façade at Milan Cathedral. They were awarded the Canonica Prize in 1883. [1] Together with Giuseppe Bertini, he decorated some rooms at the Turati Palace . In 1882, he participated in the competition for a monument to Victor Emmanuel II, [2] for which he was awarded a gold medal.

Born in Verona, he studied music at the Milan Conservatory from 1855 where he was a pupil of Stefano Ronchetti-Monteviti and, as scholar William Ashbrook notes, "where he struck up a lifelong friendship with Arrigo Boito, two years his junior" and with whom he was to collaborate in many ways.

Carlo Cossutta was a prominent Italian dramatic tenor of Slovene descent who had a major international opera career that spanned from the mid-1950s through the late 1990s. He began and ended his career at the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires where he sang regularly from 1958 through 1998. He first drew international attention in 1964 when he sang the title role in the world premiere of Alberto Ginastera's Don Rodrigo, which led to a series of appearances at the Royal Opera, London during the 1960s. In the 1970s his international career skyrocketed with appearances at most of the major opera houses in Europe and the United States. He remained active on the international stage during the 1980s but his career slowed down significantly in the 1990s after he contracted liver cancer.

Pier Miranda Ferraro was an Italian operatic tenor who had an active international opera career from 1951 through 1981. He particularly excelled in the dramatic Italian repertoire with his signature role being the title role in Giuseppe Verdi's opera Otello. Other important roles in his performance repertoire included Radames in Verdi's Aida, Alvaro in La Forza del Destino, and des Grieux in Giacomo Puccini's Manon Lescaut. He also found success in the German repertoire portraying Wagnerian heroes. Although he was a gifted singer and had a highly impressive list of performance credits, he never achieved the international recognition enjoyed by his most important contemporaries, such as Franco Corelli or Mario Del Monaco. After retiring from the opera stage in 1981 he took up a second highly successful career as a voice teacher.

From 1904 to 1932, he was the Gramophone Company's chief conductor and artistic director in Italy, responsible for some of the earliest full-length opera recordings, most of them with the orchestra of La Scala, Milan and prominent singers there.
