Carlo Francisco Manatad (born October 4, 1987) is a Filipino filmmaker and editor. [1] He is one of the most prolific editors in the Philippines [2] and has edited the films Ruined Heart (2014), A Gentle Night (2017), Balangiga (2017) and Women of the Weeping River (2018) to name a few. As a director, his films have screened in a number of international film festivals, such as in Locarno, Toronto, Busan, and Cannes.

His most recent work is his feature film directorial debut, Whether the Weather is Fine (2021), which premiered at Locarno and won the Cinema e Gioventù Prize. [3]

Early life and education

Manatad was born in Tacloban City, Philippines. [1] He studied in business school initially, then pursued engineering during his first few years of university before eventually shifting to film. He graduated from the University of the Philippines Film Institute. [4] Manatad is also an alumnus of the Asian Film Academy, Berlinale Talent Campus, and Locarno Filmmakers Academy. [5]

Career

Manatad has worked on over 60 feature films as an editor and had been working as an editor for nine years before he started directing. [6] In 2015, after encouragement from Khavn de la Cruz, Manatad directed his first short film Junilyn Has. [7] The film was screened at the Locarno Film Festival and Singapore International Film Festival. [8] [9]

The film A Gentle Night (2017), for which Manatad served as editor, won the Short Film Palme d'Or at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival. Meanwhile, Manatad's short film Jodilerks Dela Cruz (2017), which originally was created as a treatment to show to producers and practice for a feature, was submitted and unexpectedly accepted to La Semaine de la Critique, a parallel sidebar section of Cannes which aims to discover new talented filmmakers. [8] [10] [11] It also won the Best Southeast Asian Short Film award at the 2017 Singapore International Film Festival. [12]

In 2018, Manatad returned to the Singapore International Film Festival with another short film The Imminent Immanent (2018), a companion piece to his feature film. [13]

In 2021, Manatad wrote and directed his first feature film, Whether the Weather is Fine. The film had its world premiere at the Locarno Film Festival, competing in the Concorso Cineasti del Presente (Filmmakers of the Present Competition) program, where it won the Cinema E Gioventù Prize. [14] [15] The film also screened at the Toronto International Film Festival in the Contemporary World Cinema section. [16]

<i>The Tesla World Light</i> 2017 Canadian film

The Tesla World Light is an 8-minute 2017 black and white avant-garde film by Montreal director Matthew Rankin imagining the latter days of inventor Nikola Tesla in 1905 in New York City. Rankin has stated that he was interested in exploring Tesla's optimistic utopian vision. The film is a fanciful amalgamation of elements from Tesla's life including his 1905 pleadings for J.P. Morgan to continue funding his World Wireless System and his love for a pigeon. Rankin has stated that "everything in the film is drawn from something [Tesla] wrote or said." The film uses excerpts of Tesla's actual letters to Morgan, which the filmmaker found in the Library of Congress; even a reference to Tesla falling in love with an "electric pigeon" was based on an interview with Tesla, according to Rankin. Juliana Rojas is a Brazilian filmmaker who was born in Campinas, São Paulo. She graduated in Cinema in Escola de Comunicação e Artes da USP where she met fellow Brazilian filmmaker Marco Dutra. Whether the Weather is Fine or Kun Maupay Man It Panahon is a 2021 drama film directed and co-written by Carlo Francisco Manatad in his feature directorial debut. The film is a disaster movie which combines satirical and surreal elements. Starring Daniel Padilla, Rans Rifol, and Charo Santos-Concio, the film is set against the backdrop of the devastation caused by the 2013 Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines. The film is a joint production by Black Sheep Productions, Globe Studios, and Dreamscape Entertainment.

Francinne Roy Rifol, better known by her screen name Rans Rifol is a Filipino singer and actress. She was a former member of Filipino idol group MNL48.
