Carlye J. Hughes is the eleventh and current bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Newark. She was ordained as a bishop on September 22, 2018. [1]

Early life and education

Hughes, a native of Fort Worth, Texas, received a Bachelor of Arts in Drama from the University of Texas at Austin and worked as a corporate trainer for many years before attending seminary at the Virginia Theological Seminary, graduating in 2005. Hughes is currently a Doctor of Ministry student at the School of Theology of the University of the South in Sewanee, TN. [2]

Ordained ministry

Hughes was ordained in 2005. She served in a Lilly Fellowship at St. James' Episcopal Church in New York City, followed by five years as rector of St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Peekskill, New York. [3] Trinity Episcopal Church in Fort Worth, Texas, called Hughes to serve as rector beginning in June 2013. Hughes is the first woman to serve as rector in the Episcopal Diocese of Fort Worth and the first African-American priest to serve in that parish. [4]

Personal life

Hughes is married to David Smedley and is the daughter of Coach Robert Hughes.

James Scott Mayer is the fifth and current Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Northwest Texas in The Episcopal Church. He was elected after two ballots in an electing convention at St. Paul's on the Plains Church in Lubbock, Texas on November 22, 2008, and was consecrated as Bishop of Northwest Texas on March 21, 2009. Prior to his election as Bishop of Northwest Texas, Mayer served as Rector of the Church of the Heavenly Rest in Abilene, Texas.

C. Wallis Ohl Jr.

Charles Wallis Ohl Jr. was the Provisional Bishop of Fort Worth in The Episcopal Church. Jack Iker had been the Bishop of Fort Worth in the Episcopal Church until a super-majority of the diocese voted to dissolve its union with the General Convention at the 2007 and 2008 diocesan conventions. Those members of the diocese who wished to remain in the Episcopal Church met in a special convention on February 7, 2009. Edwin F. Gulick Jr., the Bishop of Kentucky who was planning to retire soon, was appointed as Provisional Bishop. In November 2009, the Annual Convention of that diocese elected Ohl as their new provisional bishop.

Donald Davies (bishop)

Archibald Donald Davies was an American Anglican bishop. A. native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he became the fourth Episcopal bishop of Dallas and subsequently the first Episcopal bishop of Fort Worth. Davies was also a founder of the Evangelical and Catholic Mission, and later founded the Episcopal Missionary Church, after which he became Archbishop and Primate of the Christian Episcopal Church (XnEC).

C. Andrew Doyle

Charles Andrew "Andy" Doyle is the ninth and current Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Texas in The Episcopal Church. He was elected bishop co-adjutor on May 24, 2008, and was seated as Bishop of Texas on June 7, 2009. Prior to his election as Bishop of Texas, Doyle served as Canon to the Ordinary under his predecessor, Don A. Wimberly. In February 2020, he announced that the Episcopal Diocese of Texas would start a $13 million racial reconciliation initiative.
