Carmarthen Town North and South

Carmarthen Town North and South (Welsh : Gogledd a De Tref Caerfyrddin) is an electoral ward for Carmarthenshire County Council in Carmarthen, Wales. It is represented by three county councillors.

The ward was created following a boundary review by the Local Democracy and Boundary Commission for Wales (LDBCW), with Carmarthen Town North merged with Carmarthen Town South, effective from the May 2022 local elections. The new ward saw an overall reduction in councillors for those parts of Carmarthen, from four to three.^[1] There was opposition to these changes from Carmarthen Town Council, who pointed out that the population of the town was growing, the new ward boundary was not easily identifiable and the ward included the businesses of Carmarthen town centre, which generated a lot of extra work for councillors.^[1]

The ward stretches from the Carmarthen Showground in the west, to Glangwili Hospital in the east. It is centred on Carmarthen town centre, also including the areas of Llanllwch, Johnstown and Tanerdy. Carmarthen Town West ward covers the remaining northwest quadrant of Carmarthen.^[2] The electorate of this ward, according to the 2019 LDBCW report, was 6,623.^[3]

2022 local election

Carmarthen Town North and South was seen as one of the key battlegrounds in the 2022 elections, following its boundary changes and reduction in number of councillors.^[4] Competition was extremely close between Plaid Cymru and the Labour Party, the latter missing out on a seat by only 6 votes.^[5] Plaid Cymru's Peter Hughes Griffiths (formerly of Carmarthen Town North), Gareth John and Alun Lenny (formerly of Carmarthen Town South) won the seats.

Carmarthenshire County Council is the local authority for the county of Carmarthenshire, Wales. It provides a range of services including education, planning, transport, social services and public safety. The council is one of twenty-two unitary authorities that came into existence on 1 April 1996 under the provisions of the Local Government (Wales) Act 1994. It took over local government functions previously provided by the three district councils of Carmarthen, Dinefwr, and Llanelli, as well as the county-level services in the area from Dyfed County Council, all of which councils were abolished at the same time.

The fifth election to Carmarthenshire County Council was held on 1 May 2012. It was preceded by the 2008 election and was followed by the 2017 election. Plaid Cymru won 28 seats whilst Labour and the Independents won 23 each. The main feature of the election was a Labour recovery in the Llanelli area, and to some extent in the Gwendraeth and Ammanford area also, mainly at the expense of Independent candidates. Plaid Cymru lost ground to Labour in the Llanelli area but gained seats elsewhere, becoming the largest party. An Independent-Labour coalition was again formed, but with Labour as the leading partner. As a result, Kevin Madge replaced Meryl Gravell as the leader of the council.

Ammanford is the name of an electoral ward to Carmarthenshire County Council, representing the community of Ammanford, Carmarthenshire, Wales.

Cenarth is an electoral ward, representing the communities of Newcastle Emlyn and Cenarth, Carmarthenshire, Wales. It is strangely named Cenarth, rather than Newcastle Emlyn as Newcastle Emlyn has the larger population. A similar ward for local elections prior to 1987 was named Newcastle Emlyn.

The 2022 Carmarthenshire County Council election took place on Thursday 5 May 2022 to elect 75 members to Carmarthenshire Council. On the same day, elections were held to the other 21 local authorities and to community councils in Wales as part of the 2022 Welsh local elections.
