Carol Wyckoff Hunstein (born August 16,1944) is an American lawyer and judge from Georgia. She is a former Justice of the Supreme Court of Georgia. She served on the Court as an associate justice from 1992 to 2009 and 2013 to 2018 and as Chief Justice from 2009 to 2013. [4] [5]
Hunstein was born in Miami,Florida,on August 16,1944,to John C. and Mary Reynolds Wyckoff. [6] By age 23,she was a divorced,single mother who had lost her left leg to cancer. [7] However,she overcame this adversity receiving an Associate's degree from Miami-Dade Community College in 1970,and shortly thereafter a Bachelor of Science degree from Florida Atlantic University (FAU) in 1972. Upon graduation from FAU,Hunstein enrolled in the Stetson University College of Law. In 1976,she received her Juris Doctor,was admitted to the Georgia Bar Association,and subsequently went into private practice. [8]
Hunstein moved from Florida to Atlanta,Georgia,in 1976. Having established herself in the legal community by 1984,she ran against four men for election to the Superior Court in DeKalb County and made it into the runoff. During the three-week runoff,for the first time Hunstein began using the slogan “This time,this woman,’’and upon election became the first female superior court judge in the county. [7]
In November 1992,Hunstein was nominated to the Supreme Court of Georgia by Governor Zell Miller. She was the second female Associate Justice in Georgia history. Hunstein was re-elected by voters four times,most recently in November 2012. [9] In June 2009,Hunstein was unanimously elected to replace the retiring Leah Ward Sears as chief justice. [2] Hunstein served from July 2009 until August 2013,taking a hiatus from May to July 2012 to allow presiding judge George Carley to serve as Chief Justice before he retired. Presiding judge Hugh P. Thompson was elected to replace Hunstein at the end of her term. [1] Hunstein then resumed her role as Associate Justice,serving until her retirement at the end of 2018. She was replaced by Georgia Court of Appeals judge John Ellington. [10]
Hunstein also served as an adjunct professor at the Emory University School of Law. [11]
Carol married Ralph J. Hunstein in 1976. [6] They have two daughters (Krista and Gabrielle) and a son from her previous marriage (John Abate). [6]
Barbara Joan Pariente is an attorney and jurist from Florida. She was chief justice of the Florida Supreme Court from July 1,2004,until June 30,2006. Pariente is the second woman to hold the position of chief justice and served on the court from 1997 to 2019. From 1993 to 1997 she was a judge on Florida's Fourth District Court of Appeal.

She previously served as an Alaska trial court judge for nearly eight years,from 1988 to 1996. Fabe was the first woman appointed to the Alaska Supreme Court,as well as its first female chief justice.
Peggy Ann Quince is a former justice of the Supreme Court of Florida,having previously served as chief justice from July 1,2008,until June 30,2010. Quince was the second African American and third woman to serve as chief justice. She had been a justice of the Court since 1999,and was the first African-American woman to sit on the state's highest Court and the third female Justice. From 1993 to 1997,she served as a judge on Florida's Second District Court of Appeal. On July 1,2008,Quince assumed the office of Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Florida for two years,the first African-American woman to head any branch of Florida government.
Stetson University College of Law,founded in 1900 and part of Stetson University,is Florida's first law school. Originally located near the university's main campus in DeLand,Florida,the law school moved in 1954 to Gulfport,Florida. The law school occupies a historic 1920s resort hotel,the Rolyat Hotel,designed by Richard Kiehnel. The College of Law is accredited by the American Bar Association and has been a member of the Association of American Law Schools since 1931. The college also has a campus in Tampa,Florida that shares space with a working court,Florida's Second District Court of Appeal.
Mercer University School of Law is the professional law school of Mercer University. Founded in 1873,it is one of the oldest law schools in the United States;the first law school accredited by the bar in Georgia,and the second oldest of Mercer's 12 colleges and schools. Virginia Lynn Linder is an American judge from Oregon who served as the 99th justice of the Oregon Supreme Court from January 2007 until January 2016. She served on the Oregon Court of Appeals from 1997 until her election to the state's Supreme Court in the 2006,an electoral campaign in which she defeated former Labor Commissioner and Republican gubernatorial candidate Jack Roberts.

Harold Leon Sebring,nicknamed Tom Sebring,was a Florida Supreme Court justice,and an American judge at one of the Subsequent Nuremberg Trials of German war criminals after World War II. Sebring was a native of Kansas and an alumnus of Kansas State Agricultural College. While Sebring attended law school at the University of Florida,he also served as the head coach of the Florida Gators football team that represented the university.
William Glenn Terrell was a state legislator and justice of the Florida Supreme Court from 1923 to 1964. During the time of his tenure on the Florida Supreme Court,he served as Associate Justice and as chief justice. His 41-year tenure was the longest of any judge on that body.
