Caroline McGowan (born February 25, 1991) is an American actress and beauty pageant titleholder from Corvallis, Oregon, who was crowned Miss Oregon 2011. She competed for the Miss America 2012 title but was not a Top 16 semi-finalist.

Pageant career

Miss Oregon 2011

In March 2011, McGowan was crowned Miss Linn-Benton County 2011. [3] She entered the Miss Oregon pageant in late June 2011 as one of 22 qualifiers for the state title. [4] [5] McGowan's competition talent was a classic vocal performance of the aria "Chanson Boheme" from the opera Carmen . Her platform was "Eating Disorder Awareness: Empowerment Through Attitude". [6] [7]

McGowan won the competition on Saturday, July 2, 2011, when she received her crown from outgoing Miss Oregon titleholder Stephenie Steers. [8] [9] She earned more than $10,000 in scholarship money and other prizes from the state pageant. As Miss Oregon, her activities included public appearances across the state of Oregon. [10]

Vying for Miss America

McGowan was Oregon's representative at the Miss America 2012 pageant in Las Vegas, Nevada, in January 2012. [11] [12] She was not one of the 16 semi-finalists for the national crown and earned a $3,000 non-finalist scholarship prize. [13]

Personal life and education

McGowan was born in Des Moines, Iowa, and raised in suburban Waukee, Iowa. [10] She is a 2009 graduate of Waukee High School. [10] Her father is Dan McGowan and her mother is Kathy McGowan. [14]

From 2009 through 2011, McGowan was a student at Oregon State University studying communications. [2] After her year as Miss Oregon, McGowan transferred to Portland State University where she studied philosophy. [15]

The Miss Alaska competition is a scholarship pageant that selects the representative for the state of Alaska in the Miss America pageant. The Miss Oregon competition is a regional scholarship competition and beauty pageant that selects the representative for the US state of Oregon in the Miss America pageant. The annual event includes contestants from across the state and awards scholarships to the participants.

The Miss Black USA Scholarship Pageant is a national scholarship competition for young women of African descent that was founded in 1986 by Karen Arrington. While Ms. Arrington has a long-standing history of hosting a national Miss Black USA Scholarship Pageant, her system has not been exclusive in doing so consecutively. As indicated by the chart below, there have been some years where "no pageant was held" by Ms. Arrington's State of Maryland organized non-profit, for example in years such as 1998, 1999 and 2000. However, similar to Miss USA and Miss America both being national systems, there have been other non-profits to host national scholarship pageants to celebrate Black women, with documented queens.

Miss America 2012, the 85th Miss America pageant, was held at the Theatre for the Performing Arts of Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino on the Las Vegas Strip in Paradise, Nevada on Saturday, January 14, 2012. Miss America 2011, Teresa Scanlan from Nebraska, crowned her successor Laura Kaeppeler from Wisconsin at the end of this event. It was broadcast live on ABC. All 50 states plus the District of Columbia, Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico competed for the title.

Kelley Elizabeth Johnson is an American nurse, TV host and beauty pageant titleholder. In addition to being a Chief Nurse Advocate, she is also a doctoral student, keynote speaker and national spokeswoman. Kelly Johnson was also crowned Miss Colorado 2015 and placing 2nd runner-up at Miss America 2016. Johnson later won Miss California USA 2018. She placed in the top 10 at Miss USA 2018.

Kelsey Earley is an American beauty pageant titleholder from Lebanon, Maine, who was crowned Miss Maine 2015. She competed for the Miss America 2016 title in September 2015.

Tamara Jean "Tammy" Fazzolari Wallace is an American beauty pageant titleholder from Portland, Oregon, who was crowned Miss Oregon 1987. She competed for the Miss America 1988 title in September 1987 but was not a Top-10 finalist. Her daughter, Ali Wallace, was crowned Miss Oregon 2015.

The Miss Oregon's Teen competition is the pageant that selects the representative for the U.S. state of Oregon in the Miss America's Teen pageant.

McKensie Lane Garber is an American beauty pageant titleholder from Hale, Missouri, who was named Miss Missouri's Outstanding Teen 2011 and crowned Miss Missouri 2015. She competed for the Miss America 2016 title in September 2015.

CC Barber is an American beauty pageant titleholder from Scappoose, Oregon, who was crowned Miss Oregon 2009. She competed for the Miss America 2010 title in January 2010 and placed in the Top 15 semi-finalists.
