Casella Family Brands is a family-owned wine company based in Australia. Its most well-known brand name is yellow tail .

History

According to the company website, Casella Family Brands was started in 1969 by founders Maria Casella and Filippo Casella, who had immigrated from Sicily to Australia. They purchased land in New South Wales in 1965, beginning to grow grapes for local winemakers. They produced their own wines starting in 1969. The company began selling its Yellow tail brand in the United States in 2001. [1] In Feb. 2016, Casella began selling beer, with a Yellow Tail lager sold in the United States. [2] Casella Family purchased the brand Morris Wines of Rutherglen from Pernod Ricard Winemakers in Jul. 2016, taking full ownership. [3]

In 2018, Casella Family Brands was reportedly worth $ 1.5 billion. That year, Marcello Casella, who owned 30 % of the company and who had left management in 2014, plead guilty to helping conceal marijuana plants in Australia. [4] Coca-Cola Europacific Partners sold its stake in the Australian Beer Co. business to Casella Family Brands in Jan. 2022. [5]

In Nov. 2022, Casella Family Brands divested around 7,000 hectares and 35 properties in Australia to Canada's Public Sector Pension Investment Board. [6] [7] The sale took place after Casella reportedly had a strategic review that May, and decided to divert funds from being vineyard owners into brand building. [8] In Nov. 2022 the company was the largest family-owned winery in Australia, and the largest exporter of wine by volume in the country as well, with [yellow tail] accounting for around 17 % of all Australian exported wine. In 2022 it was also ranked the third largest Australian wine company by total production [9] and fourth largest by total revenue. [10] It acquired the brand Ampersand in Nov. 2023 through its subsidiary Australian Beer Co. [11] As of 2023, it is led by managing director John Casella. [1]

Brand names

The company sells wine and beer under several brand names, [2] and since 2021 it also sells whisky under the Morris of Rutherglen brand. [12] In 2023 the company lists these as brands: Yellow Tail, Peter Lehmann Wines, The Magic Box Wine Collection, Brand's Laira of Coonawarra, Morris of Rutherglen, Baileys of Glenrowan, and Atmata. Chateau Ste. Michelle is a winery in Woodinville, Washington, United States, 20 miles (32 km) east of Seattle. It is the state's oldest winery and produces Chardonnay, Cabernet, Merlot, and Riesling, and has winemaking partnerships with two vintners: Col Solare is an alliance with Tuscany's Piero Antinori and Eroica Riesling is a partnership with the Mosel's Ernst Loosen. Chateau Ste. Michelle was selected as Wine Enthusiast magazine's 2004 American Winery of the Year. It was owned by Altria, and then sold to the private equity firm Sycamore Partners in 2021.

Yalumba is an Australian winery located near the town of Angaston, South Australia in the Barossa Valley wine region. It was founded by a British brewer, Samuel Smith, who emigrated to Australia with his family from Wareham, Dorset in August 1847 aboard the ship China. Upon arriving in Adelaide in December, Smith built a small house on the banks of the River Torrens. He lived there less than a year before moving north to Angaston where he purchased a 30-acre (120,000 m2) block of land on the settlement's south eastern boundary. He named his property "Yalumba" after an indigenous Australian word for "all the land around". In 1849 Smith and his son Sidney planted Yalumba's first vineyards, beginning the Yalumba dynasty. Until the 1960s Yalumba was known for fortified wines. Today Yalumba is Australia's oldest family-owned winery. As at 2022 it was ranked the twelfth largest Australian wine company by production and ninth largest in terms of total revenue.

Yenda is a town in the Riverina district of New South Wales, Australia. The town is located about 16 kilometres (9.9 mi) east of Griffith, 65 kilometres (40 mi) north-west of Narrandera, and 550 kilometres (340 mi) west of Sydney in the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area of southern New South Wales. Although most of the original 15-acre farms have been consolidated into large vineyards and most farmhouses have disappeared, farm roads are named after the original settlers. In 1940 Yenda had two clothing stores, two bakers, two butchers, two grocery stores, two barbers, one newsagency, one pharmacy, one cinema, one Greek restaurant and one bank but residents now do their shopping in nearby Griffith. At the 2011 census, Yenda had a population of 1,503.

Tahbilk Winery is a historic Australian winery with National Trust certification. It is located 120 km (75 mi) north of Melbourne between the townships of Seymour and Nagambie in the Nagambie Lakes a sub region of Goulburn Valley Wine Region. It was established in 1860, and is the oldest family-owned winery and vineyard in Victoria. In 2022 it was ranked the eighteenth largest Australian wine company by production, and the tenth largest in terms of total revenue. The winery is part of Australia's First Families of Wine, a prominent Australian wine alliance.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Lindeman's</span> Winery in Australia

Lindeman's is an Australian wine company, owned by Treasury Wine Estates. It was founded in 1843 by Dr Henry John Lindeman, who planted its first vines at "Cawarra", Gresford, on the Upper Paterson River in the Hunter Valley region of New South Wales. Though the vineyard comprised only 40 acres (16 ha), it was well set up, with cellars and other plant for making wine from grapes grown elsewhere in the region. Lindeman also had cellars in Sydney for ageing the wine.
