The Casterton News is an English language newspaper published weekly in the town of Casterton, Victoria, Australia.

History

The Casterton News and the Merino and Sandford Record [1] was established in 1869. It later moved to Portland and was published as the Western Advertiser. In 1982, the Spectator-Observer Group bought it to again serve as the local paper for Casterton and in 1989 the name reverted to the Casterton News. The paper covers the areas rounding Casterton, Coleraine, Merino, Chetwynd, Portland, Hamilton, Heywood, Edenhope, Dartmoor and Mount Gambier. [2] Alternative titles for the publication include: Casterton news and Western Shires Advertiser, and Casterton News, Western Shires Advertiser and the Merino and Sandford Record, Casterton News and Western Shires advertiser and the Aspley, Edenhope and Harrow Advertiser. [3]

Richard Charles Guthridge was a British merchant seaman and was recognised in 1998 by the Premier of Victoria in Australia as one of the earliest and most significant pioneers of the State. He notably worked for the Henty Brothers, who established the first permanent Victorian settlement in Portland, upon his arrival in Australia. Richard ultimately settled in Charam, near Edenhope, in Victoria and raised 13 children, most of whom lived to their 80s and 90s. When he died at the age of 97, Richard left a strong legacy in Australia in the form of his contributions to the fledgling colony and his hundreds of descendants.

The Evelyn Observer was a weekly newspaper released from 1873 to 1942 in the north-east area of Melbourne, Victoria in Australia. It was first published on 31 October 1873 from a school house at Kangaroo Ground. Andrew Ross, the district's first school master and hotel-keeper was the Observer's first proprietor, and he enlisted the help of a printer, John Rossiter, who became the first editor. It then operated out of a dedicated building on the top of a hill. After the transfer of the newspaper office to Hurstbridge, the building was purchased by the Eltham Shire Council.
