Cathy Glasson is an American nurse, union leader, and former candidate for Governor of Iowa, running in the 2018 Democratic primary. [1] She is President of SEIU Local 199 in Iowa and has received support from the union. [2] Glasson lost the primary to businessman Fred Hubbell, receiving 20.5% of the vote to Hubbell's 55.5%.

She supports raising the minimum wage and a Medicare for All plan.

Knox v. Service Employees International Union, 567 U.S. 298 (2012), is a United States constitutional law case. The United States Supreme Court held in a 7–2 decision that Dianne Knox and other non-members of the Service Employees International Union did not receive the required notice of a $12 million assessment the union charged them to raise money for the union's political fund. In a tighter 5–4 ruling, the court further held that the long-standing precedent, the First Amendment requirement that non-union members covered by union contracts be given the chance to "opt out" of special fees was insufficient. Setting new precedent, the majority ruled that non-members shall be sent notice giving them the option to opt into special fees.

2019 Chicago Public Schools strike Labor strike

The 2019 Chicago Public Schools strike was a labor dispute between Chicago Public Schools and the Chicago Teachers Union and the Service Employees International Union Local 73 that lasted 14 days. The strike began on October 17, 2019 when both unions failed to reach a contract agreement with Chicago Public Schools over compensation, benefits, staffing, wrap-around services such as counselors, nurses, and librarians, and caps on class sizes. On October 31, the strike officially ended when the mayor and the Chicago Teachers Union reached a tentative agreement allowing students to go back to class on November 1, 2019. The agreement included millions of dollars dedicated to reducing class sizes, hundreds more social workers, nurses and librarians, and a 16 percent salary increase over the coming five years, but did not achieve all the main goals of the unions.

Lakesia Collins is an American union organizer and politician serving as a Democratic member of the Illinois House of Representatives for the 9th district since her appointment on July 24, 2020. The 9th district includes parts of the Near West Side, the Near North Side and North Lawndale in Chicago. Collins won the Democratic primary election for the seat and ran unopposed in the general election in 2020. She serves as the Treasurer for the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus.
