Celeste Beatty (born 1964) is the first Black woman to own a brewery in the United States. [1] [2] [3] She established her brewery, Harlem Brewing Company, in 2000. [4] [3]
Beatty was born in 1964 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. [5] She graduated from Shaw University in 1984 with a degree in International Relations. [6] Beatty was interested in studying at Shaw in part because the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, a civil rights organization, had been founded there. Some of Beatty's family members had moved from North Carolina to Harlem during the 1950s and 60s, and in the early 1990s she followed in their footsteps, moving to Harlem. [7] [8] Beatty has a son, Khouri, who was born around 1982. [9]
Beatty first started working in the non-profit sector for organizations that ran homeless shelters and worked with artists. [10] However, after experimenting in the 1990s with a homebrewing kit that she had received as a gift and teaching homebrewing classes in her home, Beatty's interesting in brewing turned professional. [11] [10] [9] [12] Beatty was also influenced by her interactions with Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield, founders of Ben & Jerry's ice cream company. Beatty helped operate Ben & Jerry's first partner shop in Harlem at the intersection of 125th St. and 5th Ave, which opened in July 1992. The ice cream shop was operated in partnership with Harlem Ark of Freedom, a non-profit organization that operated a shelter for men experiencing homelessness, some of whom worked as employees at the ice cream shop. [13] [14] [15] Beatty cited her experiences working there as inspirational in understanding how small businesses could engage the communities around them. [16]
Beatty founded her brewery, Harlem Brewing Co., in November 2000. [17] Beatty had the support of Sylvia Woods, founder and owner of Sylvia's Restaurant, who helped Beatty promote Harlem Brewing Co. in her restaurants. [17] [9]
Beatty has cited the histories of the Harlem neighborhood and West African brewing techniques and ingredients as influences in developing her beers. [18] [19] Harlem Brewing Co.'s beers include Harlem Sugar Hill Golden Ale, inspired by Duke Ellington's song Take the 'A' Train [to Sugar Hill]; Harlem Renaissance Wit, flavored with cumin, grains of paradise, orange peel, and coriander; 125th Street IPA, an India Pale Ale named in honor of one of Harlem's most iconic avenues; and Queen Stout, a stout flavored with coffee, chocolate, and cinnamon, brewed in honor of Beatty's mother, Rachel Patterson Beatty Jackson. In 2006, Anheuser-Busch offered to acquire Harlem Brewing Co., but Beatty declined. [20] Harlem Brewing Co.'s beers are sold in Whole Foods, Walmart, and Fairway Market and distributed in New York, Virginia, and North Carolina. [23] [20] Beatty's "Renaissance Wit" won the "Best Brew of New York City" in a 2018 competition. [1] [4]
Beatty has collaborated with Black brewers across the country. In 2018, Beatty partnered with Briana Brake, founder and head brewer of Spaceway Brewing Company, LLC, to open Rocky Mount Brewery in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. [24] Briana serves as the head brewer and CEO, while Beatty is the Co-Brewer and Adviser. [24] [25] In 2021, Harlem Brewing Co. collaborated with Montclair Brewery, a Black-owned brewery in Montclair, New Jersey, to create a porter called "Noble Like It Is" in honor of Gil Noble, a Black journalist who was born in Harlem to Jamaican immigrant parents and lived in Montclair. Brewers chose a porter style because porters and stouts are favored by Jamaican beer drinkers and they flavored the beer with Jamaican pimento (allspice). [26]
In 2020, Celeste Beatty and her brothers Carl Beatty and Pernell Beatty incorporated Harlem Brew South, a brewery, taproom, and training center in a former tobacco warehouse located in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. The team plans to open the facility in 2023. [27] [28] [29] [30]
In 2021, Beatty was featured in the documentary film One Pint at a Time, which also featured Alisa Bowens-Mercado, Teri Fahrendorf, and others. [31]
Beatty is also a member of the New York State Brewers Association, the Brewers Association, and the New York City Brewers Guild. [2]
Stout is a dark, top-fermented beer style which includes dry stout, oatmeal stout, milk stout and imperial stout.
Craft beer is a beer that has been made by craft breweries. They produce smaller amounts of beer, typically less than large breweries, and are often independently owned. Such breweries are generally perceived and marketed as having an emphasis on enthusiasm, new flavours, and varied brewing techniques.

Widmer Brothers is a brewery founded in 1984 in Portland, Oregon, by brothers Kurt and Robert Widmer. It is part of the Craft Brew Alliance, Inc., the 12th largest brewing company in the United States in 2017.

The United States produced 196 million barrels (23.0 GL) of beer in 2012, and consumes roughly 28 US gallons (110 L) of beer per capita annually. Goose Island Beer Company is a brewery in Chicago. The oldest currently-operating brewing company in Illinois, it began as a brewpub that opened in 1988 in the Lincoln Park neighborhood, and was named after a nearby island. A larger production brewery opened in 1995. A second brewpub, in Wrigleyville, opened in 1999 and closed in 2015.
Firestone Walker Brewing Company is a craft brewery with operations in Paso Robles, Buellton and Venice, California. The brewery was established in 1996 by brothers-in-law Adam Firestone and David Walker. The original brewery was located on a family vineyard in Los Olivos, California. Their first beer, Double Barrel Ale, was made in a patented variation of the Burton union system. The main brewing operations moved to Paso Robles in 2001. Firestone Walker is today known for bestselling beers such as 805 and Mind Haze. Firestone Walker celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2021 and is now California's second largest craft brewery.
The beers of the Caribbean are unique to each island in the region, although many are variants of the same style. Each island generally brews its own unique pale lager, the occasional stout, and often a non-alcoholic malta beverage. Contract-brewing of international beers is also common, with Heineken Pilsener and Guinness Foreign Extra Stout being the most popular. The beers vary between the islands to suit the taste and the brewing method used.
Captain Lawrence Brewing Company is a craft brewery located in Elmsford, New York. The brewery is owned and run by head brewer Scott Vaccaro. Vaccaro, a homebrewer since 1995, trained in brewing science at UC Davis.
Great Divide Brewing Company was founded by Brian Dunn in 1994 in Denver, Colorado, USA. Three months after brewing its first batch of beer, it won the first of the brewery's twelve Great American Beer Festival and four World Beer Cup awards. By 2007, Great Divide was ranked by RateBeer.com as the 23rd best brewery in the world with three of the world's top 100 beers. In December 2008, Beer Advocate magazine ranked them as the seventh best brewery on the planet.
Midnight Sun Brewing Company (MSBC) is a craft brewery that produces over 40 different ales and lagers each year. Founded in 1995, it is Anchorage, Alaska's first brewery and the second oldest in state history, following Alaska Brewing Co. in 1986. The brewery has been in their current location since May 2009, with a tap-house and full-service restaurant. MSBC has won several awards for their beers, including medals from the Great American Beer Festival and the World Beer Cup. The brewery sells its beers in 12-oz cans, 22-oz bottles, 5 gallon kegs, and 64 oz growlers. Their U.S. distribution is limited to AK, WA, ID, OR, CA, HI, and NY.
Bell's Brewery, Inc. is an American craft brewing company, with operations in Comstock and Kalamazoo, Michigan. Bell's brews acclaimed beers such as Hopslam Ale, Oberon Ale, and Two Hearted Ale. It operates a brewpub and a store selling merchandise and homebrewing supplies at its Kalamazoo location. Begun as a homebrewing store in 1983, and producing beer since 1985, it is the oldest existing craft brewery in Michigan and the oldest craft brewery east of Colorado. As of 2021, it was the 6th largest craft brewery in the United States, and was the largest independently owned brewery in Michigan when founder Larry Bell sold the company to Lion Little World Beverages - an Australian subsidiary of the Japanese Kirin beverage group at the end of 2021. The company also owns Upper Hand Brewery, a separately operated division in Escanaba, Michigan.
Porter is a style of beer that was developed in London, England in the early 18th century. It was well-hopped and dark in appearance owing to the use of brown malt. The name is believed to have originated from its popularity with porters.
Women have been active in brewing since ancient times. From the earliest evidence of brewing in 7000 BCE, until the commercialization of brewing during industrialization, women were the primary brewers on all inhabited continents. In many cultures, the deities, goddesses and protectors of brewers were female entities who were associated with fertility.
Alisa Bowens-Mercado is the founder and owner of the first Black-woman owned brewery in Connecticut - Rhythm Brewing Co. As of June 2022, Bownes-Mercado's brewery is also the only Black-woman-owned brewery in Connecticut.
