The Central California Championships also known as the Central California Open Championships (toward the end of its run) was a men's and women's international hard court tennis tournament was founded in 1911. [1] It was first played at Stockton Tennis Club Stockton, California, United States. [2] It was also hosted at other locations throughout its run until 1972 when it was discontinued. [1]

History

The tournament was first established in May 1911 when it was held at Stockton Tennis Club, Stockton, California, the event inaugural event was played from 27 to 30 May that year. [3] The first winner of the men's singles was Maurice McLoughlin, [4] and the winner of women's event was Hazel Hotchkiss. [5]

The championships have been held in various locations including the City of Stockton, which was also the location for the second edition. [1] In 1913 the tournament was moved to Sacramento the state capital of California where it remained for the duration of its run. [1] The event was discontinued as an individual competition when it became a team competition. [1] Previous winners of the men's singles have included; Roland Roberts, [1] Bill Johnston, [1] Frank Kovacs, [1] Tom Brown, [1] Whitney Reed, [1] Alex Olmedo, [1] Rafael Osuna. [1] Clark Graebner, Arthur Ashe and Stan Smith. [6]

Former winners of the women's state singles championship has included; Hazel Hotchkiss, Helen Wills, Virginia Wolfenden Kovacs, Alice Marble, Margaret Osborne, Mimi Arnold, Jean Danilovich, Rosie Casals, Farel Footman, and Nancy Richey. In 1971 the men's event became part of the ILTF Grand Prix Circuit for two editions only when it was known as the Central California Open National Hardcourt Championships. [1] The tournament was discontinued in 1972 when it was switched from an individual competition to a team competition. [1]

Frank Kovacs was an American amateur and professional tennis player in the mid-20th century. He won the U.S. National Indoor Tennis Championships singles title in 1941. He won the World Professional Championships tournament in 1945 in San Francisco. Kovacs was successful on clay and won the Great Lakes Professional Clay Court Championships near Chicago in 1946, defeating Riggs in the final, and five U.S. Professional Clay Court Championships from 1948 to 1953. Hazel Hotchkiss Wightman defeated Marion Zinderstein 6–1, 6–2 in the final to win the women's singles tennis title at the 1919 U.S. National Championships. The event was played on outdoor grass courts and held at the Philadelphia Cricket Club in Chestnut Hill, Philadelphia in the United States from June 16 through June 21, 1919. It was the first edition of the event without a challenge round. The final began in fine weather at 2:15 pm on Saturday, June 21, 1920, and lasted 28+12 minutes. It was Hazel Wightman's fourth national singles title after 1909, 1910 and 1911.

The North of England Championships and later known as the Rothmans Open North of England Championships, was a men's and women's grass court tennis tournament founded in 1884 as the North Yorkshire Tournament. It was mainly held at Scarborough, North Yorkshire, Great Britain from. The tournament was discontinued in 1974 when it was staged at Hoylake.

The East of England Championships also called the East of England Lawn Tennis Championships was a men's and women's grass court tennis tournament founded in 1885 as the Felixstowe Open Lawn Tennis Tournament. In 1889 the event had by this time become a regional level tournament that ran until 1983 when it lost its status as a senior international tour level event. However the championships are still being staged today as the East of England and an LTA British Tour.

The Wolverhampton Open was a combined men's and women's grass court tennis tournament founded in 1897 as the Wolverhampton Lawn Tennis Tournament. The first tournament was staged at Parkdale, Wolverhampton from 1897 to 1900 before it was discontinued in 1900. In 1903 a second tournament was revived and played in Newbridge, in Wolverhampton, where it ran until 1974.

The Western India Championships also known as the Western India Tennis Championships was a combined men's and women's tennis tournament, founded in 1888 as the Bombay Gymkhana Club Tournament. The championships was played at the Gymkhana Club grounds, Bombay, Maharashtra, India. The championships ran until 1980 before they was discontinued.

The Italian Riviera Championships also known as the San Remo International was a combined men's and women's clay court tennis tournament founded in 1903 at San Remo, Liguria, Northern Italy. The tournament was staged at the Tennis Club Sanremo (f.1897) until 1964, and was part of the Italian Riviera circuit of tennis tournaments.

The Mid-Kent Open Championships was a men's and women's grass court tennis tournament founded in 1881, as a men only event called the Maidstone Lawn Tennis Tournament. The Asian Championships also known as the Asian International Championships or Asian Lawn Tennis Championships was an open international men's and women's grass and clay court tennis tournament founded in 1949 as the International Championships of Asia. The tournament was organised by the Stockton Parks & Recreation Department in association with the Northern California Tennis Association and was played on outdoor hard courts at the Oak Park Tennis Center, Stockton, California, United States until 1978.

The San Jose State All-Comers Championship and also known as the California State All-Comers Championship and later known as the Monarch Matches Open was a combined men's and women's hard court tennis tournament founded in 1956 as the San Jose All-Comers Tennis Tournament.

The California State Championships also called the California Championships was a men's and women's international hard court tennis tournament was founded in 1901. It was first played at Hotel Rafael, San Rafael, California, United States. It was also hosted at other locations throughout its run until 1983 when it was discontinued.

The Northern California Championships was a men's and women's international hard court tennis tournament founded in circa 1900 as the Championships of the Northern Counties of California a doubles event only. In 1902 a singles event was added to the schedule for the first time. It was first played at the Sacramento Lawn Tennis Club Sacramento, California, United States. It was also hosted at other locations throughout its run until 1974 when it was discontinued, and was known as the Northern California Sectional Championships at that point.
