Central Military Library (CBW) is the main library of Poland Ministry of National Defense located in Warsaw. [1] In 2009, it was awarded the Gloria Artis Medal for Merit to Culture. [2]

Description

It serves as the leading library in the specialization of collections on war science, armed forces and military technology, forming the national library resource. It was established by an order of the Minister of Military Affairs on June 13, 1919. [3] During the Second Republic, Lt. Col. Marian Lodynski from 1919 to 1933 and Jan Niezgoda from 1933 to 1939 served as director of the CBW. [4]

During World War II, the Library lost 99% of its collection (406,000 out of 409,000 units). [5]

From 1983 to 1991, the Central Military Library was named after Colonel Zbigniew Zaluski. [6]

The CBW's book collection numbers about 600,000 library units and is unique in the military field. It includes:

The Central Military Library administers and manages the "Zbrojownia" Military Digital Library. [7]

The CBW is involved in providing materials to the NATO Science and Technology Organization (NATO STO), the NATO Center for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE) and the European Defense Agency (EDA). [8]

Afterwards it continued to serve, undergoing a number of changes in name and role. Today, it exists as the 16th Mechanised Division.

The Medal of the Armed Forces in the Service of the Fatherland is a Polish military decoration, awarded for long service and excellent work in the army. Until 1968, it was a state distinction awarded by the head of state; from 1968 it was a departmental award, granted by the Minister of Defence. Bellona Publishing House is a private publishing house based in Warsaw, Poland. It was created in 1990 from restructuring of the state-run Wydawnictwo MON. It specialises in books on military history. Among the authors who published with Bellona are academic historians Henryk Samsonowicz, Lech Wyszczelski, Leszek Moczulski, and Tadeusz Panecki as well as journalists and writers like Krzysztof Daukszewicz, Grzegorz Miecugow, Magdalena Kozak. Bellona issues more than 300 books yearly. It is also the publisher of Mówią Wieki, a monthly historical magazine established in 1958.

The War Studies University is the highest military academic institution in Poland. It was formed by Ministry of National Defence in 2016 in place of the former National Defence University Academy established in 1990. Alfons Alfred Zgrzebniok was a Polish teacher, activist, and politician from Silesia. He was one of the cofounders of the Silesian Insurgent Association in the early 1920s and also helped organize the Association for Defense of the Western Border and the Committee for the Defense of Upper Silesia. He commanded the Polish-Silesian forces in both the First and Second Silesian Uprising. He was the recipient of several awards and several schools and other landmarks in Poland are named after him.
