Ceyda Torun is a Turkish-born film documentary film director and assistant director. [1] [2] Her best known work is Kedi, a 2016 documentary on street cats in Istanbul. [3] [4]

Biography

Torun was born in Istanbul and moved to Amman, Jordan with her family at age eleven. She moved to the United States to attend high school. After graduating from Boston University with a degree in Anthropology, she returned to Turkey to work under director Reha Erdem. Upon returning to the United States, Torun co-founded production company Termite Films with cinematographer and husband Charlie Wuppermann. [5]

Career

Torun worked as an assistant director on the 2011 television series Time for Passion, before her first feature, Kedi, in 2016. Kedi documents the lives of street cats and the people who care for them in Torun’s native Istanbul. Kedi was well-received, and won Best First Documentary at the Critics' Choice Documentary Awards in 2017.

Torun cited her own childhood among street cats as her inspiration for the film. She intended the film to be an examination of the human condition, saying that some of its aspects “can only be gleaned from our relationships with other animals in this case, cats.” [2]

Bad Cat is a 2016 Turkish adult computer-animated action comedy film directed by Mehmet Kurtuluş and Ayşe Ünal. The film is based on the comic strip Kötu Kedi Şerafettin by Bülent Üstün. This is an independent movie and this work was self-funded, with some of the budget raised through product placements. It was featured and became the first animated Turkish film and the first comic's adaptation from Turkey to be shown at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in 2016. After the film's television premiere took place on 1 July 2017 in Turkey, the Radio and Television Supreme Council was fined the Kanal D television channel for airing this adult animation, which has a cat character who is a smoker and an alcoholic.

It debuted on the YouTube Red streaming service on 10 May 2017. It was released on DVD in the U.S. on 14 November 2017. The film received critical acclaim, and grossed over $5 million. Time magazine listed it as one of its top ten films of 2017.

Feral cats in Istanbul

Istanbul hosts a sizeable feral cat population, with estimates ranging from a hundred thousand to over a million stray cats. Many Turkish citizens view street animals as communally-owned pets, rather than traditional strays, and the country has a blanket no-kill, no capture policy.

The Best First Documentary Feature is one of the annual Critics' Choice Documentary Awards. It is usually given to the director. The "first feature" designation is applied to the director.
