Rhythm and blues, often abbreviated as R&B, is a genre of popular music that originated in African-American communities in the 1940s. The term was originally used by record companies to describe recordings marketed predominantly to urban African Americans, at a time when "urbane, rocking, jazz based music with a heavy, insistent beat" was becoming more popular. In the commercial rhythm and blues music typical of the 1950s through the 1970s, the bands usually consisted of piano, one or two guitars, bass, drums, one or more saxophones, and sometimes background vocalists. R&B lyrical themes often encapsulate the African-American experience of pain and the quest for freedom and joy, as well as triumphs and failures in terms of relationships, economics, and aspirations.
Chubby Checker is an American Rock and roll singer and dancer. He is widely known for popularizing many dance styles including The Twist dance style with his 1960 hit cover of Hank Ballard & The Midnighters' R&B song "The Twist", and The Pony dance style with the 1961 cover of the song "Pony Time". However, his best known song is the hit "Let's Twist Again", released in the same year; he also popularized in 1962 the song "Limbo Rock", originally a previous year instrumental hit by The Champs to whom he added lyrics, and its trademark Limbo dance, as well as others dance styles such as The Fly. In September 2008, "The Twist" topped Billboard's list of the most popular singles to have appeared in the Hot 100 since its debut in 1958, an honor it maintained for an August 2013 update of the list.
Lana Michele Moorer, better known by her stage name MC Lyte, is a Grammy–nominated American rapper, DJ, actress and entrepreneur. Considered one of the pioneers of female rap, Lyte first gained fame in the late 1980s, becoming the first solo female rapper to release a full album with 1988's critically acclaimed Lyte as a Rock. She released a total of eight solo studio albums and an EP with Almost September.
Bertrand Russell Berns, also known as Bert Russell and (occasionally) Russell Byrd, was an American songwriter and record producer of the 1960s. Berns' song writing credits include "Twist and Shout", "Piece of My Heart", "Here Comes the Night", "Hang on Sloopy", and "Everybody Needs Somebody to Love", and his productions include "Baby, Please Don't Go", "Brown Eyed Girl" and "Under the Boardwalk".
Lou Monte was an Italian American singer best known for a number of best-selling, Italian-themed novelty records which he recorded for both RCA Victor and Reprise Records in the late 1950s and early 1960s, most famously "Lazy Mary" (1958) and the 1962/63 million-selling US hit "Pepino the Italian Mouse", plus the seasonal track "Dominick the Donkey". He also recorded on Roulette Records, Jubilee Records, Regalia Records, Musicor Records, Laurie Records, and AFE Records.
"Don't Cha" is the debut single recorded by American girl group The Pussycat Dolls from their debut studio album PCD (2005). The song features rapper Busta Rhymes who co-wrote the song with its producer, CeeLo Green. The song contains an interpolation of "Swass" which is written and performed by Sir Mix-a-Lot. It is an R&B song. "Don't Cha" was originally recorded by Tori Alamaze who released the song as her first single; however, after minor success and dissatisfaction with her label she gave up her rights to the song. Universal Music Group gave it to the Pussycat Dolls as the label was trying to reinvent the girl group.

Ballard's version was a moderate hit, peaking at number 28 on the Billboard Hot 100. On the US Billboard Hot R&B Sides chart, the original version of "The Twist" first peaked at number sixteen in 1959 and at number six in 1960.

Heartbreak Hill is a studio album by English band Strawbs. The album was recorded in 1978 but, due to record deal and management difficulties, was not released until 1995. The recording schedule conflicted with guitarist Dave Lambert's plans to record a solo album, so session musicians Jo Partridge and Miller Anderson were recruited to supply electric guitar.
