Early life and education

States was born in Edmonds, Washington. He holds a BA from Evergreen State College and an MFA from Tyler School of Art and Architecture. [4]

Life and work

States lives in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, [1] where he is a member of the Vox Populi artist collective. [5] In 2009 we was an artist-in-residence at Light Work in Syracuse, New York. [1]

States is a gay man. His work is concerned with questions of masculinity and vulnerability, specifically pursued in a landscape of queer sex and desire. [6]

Cruising (2011) is a book of photographs of men cruising for sex outdoors in parks. [7] "The subjects are anonymous, often appearing only partially, obscured by vegetation or shadows", [8] and only a small part of the picture among the lush forestry of their surroundings. [2] Having initially worked solely with photography, since 2012/13 States has also worked with other mediums. [6]

For his Masculinities series, States placed an ad on Craigslist seeking anyone who identified as being masculine. His subjects were mostly cisgendered men, but also included a few trans men, and women. He "met the subjects at their homes, where he photographed them in poses and scenarios they themselves dictated." The "variety proves how impossible it is to fit masculinity into one box or to define it simply. Each person States photographs crafts their own idea of masculinity". [9] [10] Accompanying each portrait is a quote describing what it means to them to be manly. [3]

States has said:

"I'm a big fan of [ Katy Grannan ]. Her work feels very cruel and very tender at the same time and I love that idea of exploitation, of power dynamics. It makes the images exciting. I try to make work that creates a discussion about exploitation. I find the idea of, "How much am I exploiting the subject here?" very interesting." [11]

Masculinity is a set of attributes, behaviors, and roles associated with men and boys. Masculinity can be theoretically understood as socially constructed, and there is also evidence that some behaviors considered masculine are influenced by both cultural factors and biological factors. To what extent masculinity is biologically or socially influenced is subject to debate. It is distinct from the definition of the biological male sex, as anyone can exhibit masculine traits. Standards of masculinity vary across different cultures and historical periods. It is sometimes contrasted to femininity.

Pro-feminism refers to support of the cause of feminism without implying that the supporter is a member of the feminist movement. The term is most often used in reference to men who actively support feminism and its efforts to bring about the political, economic, cultural, personal, and social equality of women with men. A number of pro-feminist men are involved in political activism, most often in the areas of gender equality, women's rights, and ending violence against women.

In modern slang, "Chad" refers to a stereotypical alpha male who embodies traditional masculine traits, such as being physically attractive, confident, charismatic, and sexually successful. The term is often used humorously or ironically to describe someone who fits this mold, and can be seen as a caricature of toxic masculinity. However, it's essential to note that the term can also be used in a derogatory manner to mock or criticize individuals who exhibit excessive arrogance or entitlement. Originating in internet forums and social media, the term has evolved and spread to broader online communities and popular culture.

Gender roles in non-heterosexual communities are a topic of much debate; some people believe traditional, heterosexual gender roles are often erroneously enforced on non-heterosexual relationships by means of heteronormative culture and attitudes towards these non-conformative relationships.

The concept of toxic masculinity is used in academic and media discussions to refer to those aspects of hegemonic masculinity that are socially destructive, such as misogyny, homophobia, and violent domination. These traits are considered "toxic" due in part to their promotion of violence, including sexual assault and domestic violence. Socialization of boys sometimes also normalizes violence, such as in the saying "boys will be boys" about bullying and aggression.
