Vox Populi is a nonprofit art gallery and collective in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Founded in 1988, [1] it presents experimental art and ideas via monthly shows, performances, and gallery talks. [2] Located on North 11th Street, it is the longest running artist collective in the city. [3]

Among the artists whose work the space has hosted include Kembra Pfahler, Guy Ben-Ari, [1] Virgil Marti [4] [5] and Brainstormers member Maria Dumlao. [6] Musical performers at their old location on Cherry Street included Gang Gang Dance, Comets on Fire, Growing, [7] Wolf Eyes [8] and many others.

History

In 2011, Vox Populi opened a 1,000-square-foot black box performance space, AUX, which highlights interdisciplinary time-based art with sound art, film screenings, performance, dance, and experimental theater as well as hosting classes, workshops, and other events. [9] AUX has hosted programs with performers and media artists such as Dynasty Handbag, [10] Jacolby Satterwhite, [11] C.A. Conrad, Angela Washko, [12] Ann Hirsch, [13] and Miguel Gutiérrez [14] among others.

Vox is also home to Fourth Wall, a dedicated video lounge which the collective invites outside curators to program for 2 to 3 months at a time. Fourth Wall was founded as an independent gallery within the space called "Screening" in 2007 by collaborative video artists and former members Matthew Suib and Nadia Hironaka. [15]

In 2010, Vox Populi was invited to participate in "No Soul For Sale" at the Tate Modern, a festival of 70 international independent non-commercial art spaces, held in the Turbine Hall as part of the museum's 10th anniversary celebrations. [16] Four years later, Vox Populi hosted the show "Alien She," the first exhibition to examine the lasting impact of Riot Grrrl on artists and cultural producers working now co-curated by Astria Suparak and Ceci Moss. [17]

Funding

The galley's programming is made possible in part by funding from The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage among other charitable foundations and private individuals. [18]

The Brainstormers are a group of young American women artists whose performances mostly address gender inequity in the US art world. Consisting of fellow Hunter MFA graduates Danielle Mysliwiec, Elaine Kaufmann and Maria Dumlao, their most well-known work is one where they stood in costume, at the entrance of P.S.1 during the Greater New York show in 2005, pointing accusingly at the institution for its gender discrimination in its selection of artists.

Angela Washko is an American new media artist and facilitator based in New York. She is currently associate professor of art at Carnegie Mellon University. Washko mobilizes communities and creates new forums for discussions of feminism where they do not exist.

Guy Ben-Ari is an Israeli painter living and working in New York City.

Reifying Desire is a six-part video series by American artist Jacolby Satterwhite, which was on view in the 2014 Biennial at the Whitney Museum of American Art. Satterwhite created 230 3D modeled versions of his body, animated figures, and his mother's drawings. Animating all of these elements, he performs in a digital "utopian and non-political space", combining his public reactions to art history, political histories, and pop culture with his mother's private drawings and inventions.

Jane Jin Kaisen is a visual artist and filmmaker based in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Jacolby Satterwhite is an American contemporary artist recognized for fusing performance, digital animation, and personal ephemera to create immersive installations and related work referencing art history, "expanded cinema," and the pop-cultural worlds of American music videos, social media, and video games. He has exhibited work at the Minneapolis Institute of Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, Louis Vuitton Foundation in Paris, the New Museum and the Museum of Modern Art, both in New York City, and the Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia. In addition to MoMA, his work is in the public collections of the Studio Museum in Harlem, the Seattle Art Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Kiasma, and the San Jose Museum of Art. Satterwhite has also served as a contributing director for the music video that accompanied Solange's 2019 visual album When I Get Home and directed a short film accompaniment to Perfume Genius's 2022 studio album Ugly Season.

The Monya Rowe Gallery is a contemporary art gallery in New York City owned and curated by Monya Rowe.

Colin Self is an American artist, composer, and choreographer. Their work centers around ideas of gender, communication, and consciousness, and their practice includes social relationships and digital technologies. They gained attention as a member of the avant-drag collective Chez Deep 2012–2014 performing in New York City, Miami, and Glasgow with members Alexis Penney, Bailey Stiles, Hari Nef, and Sam Banks. They are a member of the electronic music trio Holly Herndon, which supported Radiohead on their 2016 European tour.
