Kannada cinema, also known as Sandalwood, or Chandanavana, is the segment of Indian cinema dedicated to the production of motion pictures in the Kannada language widely spoken in the state of Karnataka. Kannada cinema is based in Gandhi Nagar, Bangalore. The 1934 film Sati Sulochana directed by Y. V. Rao was the first talkie film released in the Kannada language. It was also the first film starring Subbaiah Naidu and Tripuramba, and the first screened in the erstwhile Mysore Kingdom. It was produced by Chamanlal Doongaji, who in 1932 founded South India Movietone in Bangalore.
Girish Kasaravalli is an Indian film director, in the Kannada cinema, and one of the pioneers of the Parallel Cinema. Known internationally for his works, Kasaravalli has garnered fourteen National Film Awards, including four Best Feature Films; Ghatashraddha (1977), Tabarana Kathe (1986), Thaayi Saheba (1997) and Dweepa (2002). In 2011, he was awarded with the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award by Government of India.
Tabarana Kathe is a 1987 Indian Kannada-language film released directed by Girish Kasaravalli. It was based on a short story of the same name by Poornachandra Tejaswi. Film historian S. Theodore Baskaran picked Tabarana Kathe in Rediff.com's ten best Indian films of all time.
Lohithaswa T. S. was an Indian Kannada film actor and playwright and an English professor. He acted in more than five hundred Kannada movies, stage plays, and television serials. He was popularly known for his dominating voice in the Kannada film industry. His son is actor Sharath Lohitashwa.
Janaki Srinivasa Murthy popularly known by her penname Vaidehi was born on 12 February 1945. She is an Indian feminist writer and well-known writer of modern Kannada language fiction. Vaidehi is one of the most successful women writers in the language and a recipient of prestigious national and state-level literary awards. She has won the Sahitya Akademi Award for her collection of short stories, Krauncha Pakshigalu in 2009.
Kanasembo Kudureyaneri is a 2010 Indian Kannada language film directed by noted Kannada film director Girish Kasaravalli, based on an anthology of short stories written by Amaresh Nugadoni titled Savari, and starring Vaijanath Biradar, Umashree and Sadashiv Brahmavar in lead roles.
The Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback – Kannada is given by the Filmfare magazine as part of its annual Filmfare Awards South for Kannada films. The first Kannada award was given in 2007. Before that, since 1997 till 2005, a common award for playback was available for both Male and Female singers of all the four South Indian languages.
Koormavatara is a 2011 Indian Kannada drama film directed by Girish Kasaravalli, based on short story of the same name written by Kum. Veerabhadrappa. It stars Shikaripura Krishnamurthy, Jayanthi and Apoorva Kasaravalli in the lead roles, and Harish Raj, Cheswa, Rashmi Sumukha, Goa Dattu and Sumukha Bharadwaj feature in supporting roles. The story revolves around a government employee cast in a play to portray Mahatma Gandhi, who, on course, realizes that playing Gandhi is easier than imbibing and implementing his principles in real-life.
Anuradha Bhat is an Indian playback singer who predominantly works in Kannada language films. She has sung over 100 songs for feature films and also sung in various private musical albums.
Belambar is a village in Ankola, in Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka state, India. It is bounded by the Arabian Sea to its west and by the Western Ghats to its east The Village's topography consists of a plain that stretches up to 2.5 km from the coast. As of the 2011 India Census, Belambar had a population of 4983 people; with 2539 of those male and 2444 female.
Samyuktha Hegde is an Indian actress who predominantly works in Kannada and Tamil films. She made her film debut with the Kannada film Kirik Party opposite Rakshit Shetty, directed by Rishab Shetty. She played the role named Arya, for which she won Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress – Kannada. She made her debut in Tamil language through Comali opposite Jayam Ravi and Kajal Agarwal.
Hemanth M. Rao is an Indian film director and screenwriter who works in Kannada cinema. He rose to fame following the success of his directorial debut Godhi Banna Sadharana Mykattu (2016).
Raj B. Shetty is an Indian actor, director, and screenwriter who works in Kannada and Malayalam films.
Ammachi Yemba Nenapu is a 2018 Kannada drama film directed by Champa P Shetty, based on three short stories of writer Vaidehi. The film's music is composed by Kashinath Pattar. Raj B. Shetty, Vyjayanti V Adiga, Diya Palakkal, Deepika Aradhya, Dr. Radhakrishna Urala, Geetha Suratkal, Vishwanatha Urala feature in lead roles. The movie is produced by Prakash P. Shetty, Geetha Suratkal, Vandana Inamdar, Kala Kadamba Art Center, Gouramma under the banner Apron Productions.
Naresh Kumar HN is an Indian film director who works in Kannada-language films. He is known for 1st Rank Raju (2015) and Raju Kannada Medium (2018).
Ananya Kasaravalli is an Indian actress and director in the Kannada film industry, and a theatre artist in Karnataka, India. Born into a family of filmmakers, she had a successful acting career in films, television and theater before taking up filmmaking at LV Prasad Film and TV Academy, Chennai.
Koli Taal is an Indian Kannada satirical film written and directed by Abhilash Shetty. Koli Taal is a film about grandpa goes on an adventure to find the missing rooster and serve the chicken curry before his grandson leaves for town.
Harish Komme, is an Indian film editing professional, known for his works in Kannada cinema. He works predominantly on Kannada films. His Karnataka State Film Award for Best Editor was for his work on the feature film Mufti (2017) directed by Narthan.
Abhilash Shetty is an Indian filmmaker, screenwriter, and actor. He made a remarkable directorial debut with the critically acclaimed Kannada film Koli Taal. The film received widespread praise and was showcased at prestigious film festivals such as the New York Indian Film Festival and the Mumbai Film Festival
Koli Esru is a 2024 Indian Kannada-language drama film based on the story Huchheeri Esarina Prasanga by K T Chikkanna. Akshatha Pandavpura, Apeksha Nagaraj Chornahalli, Natana Manju, Prakash Shetty and Dakshayani N feature in lead roles. The full is jointly produced by Vanaja Vaman Rao, Sujatha Gopinath, M.G.Satya Prasad, Gouramma, Harish Komme, Mahesh Togata, Prathap R Mendon, Dileep Shetty, Vandana Inamdaar, Venu Hennur, Geetha Surathkal, Dr. Radhakrishna Ural and Prakash P Shetty under the banner Apron Productions.
