Born and raised in New York City, Ja Rule became known as a leading figure in 2000s hip hop for his blending of gangsta rap with commercially oriented pop sensibilities. He signed with Irv Gotti's Murder Inc Records, an imprint of Def Jam Recordings to release his debut studio album Venni Vetti Vecci (1999), which spawned his first hit single, "Holla Holla". Ja Rule peaked the Billboard Hot 100 thrice in 2001 with his single "Always on Time" and his guest appearances on Jennifer Lopez's "I'm Real " and "Ain't It Funny". "Put It On Me" is the second single from Ja Rule's sophomore studio album, Rule 3:36 (2000), released in December 2000 through Def Jam Records and Murder Inc. The song appeared on The Fast and the Furious (2001) soundtrack and was included on the special edition of Ja Rule's Pain Is Love (2001). "Put It On Me" features fellow Murder Inc. artist Vita, with her verse being written by Caddillac Tah. Originally, the song appeared on Rule 3:36 and only featured Ja Rule with Vita, until a remixed version was recorded with new vocals by singer Lil' Mo, which proved very popular, especially on radio. Ja Rule explained that the lyrics of the song were inspired by an argument he had with his wife to show how important she is to him. It peaked at number 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 on the week of March 19, 2001, making it Ja Rule's first top ten hit on the chart.
