Charles Guthrie is the athletic director at the University of Akron. He previously held the same position at University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, San Francisco State University, and Clark College.

Early life and education

Guthrie grew up in Albany, New York. He played basketball at Onondaga Community College before transferring and earning a B.A. s from Syracuse University and a master’s degree in education administration and policy studies from the University at Albany. [1] [2]

Career

Guthrie began his career in 1998 as an intern at Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. In 2004, he completed the NCAA Fellows Leadership Development Program. [3] After stops at Colgate University, Columbia University, Cal State San Marcos, University of California, San Diego and California State University, Los Angeles, he landed his first AD position in 2011 at Clark College in Vancouver, Washington. [2] [4] Under his leadership, 10 of 11 sports programs at Clark College made post-season appearances in 2013. [5]

He then served as the athletic director of the San Francisco State Gators from 2014 to 2017. [5] Guthrie’s tenure as the head of the Gators athletic department was a short one, but he accomplished a great deal in that time. Annual giving doubled during his tenure and Guthrie was also successful in securing a $2 million gift, the largest one-time individual gift to San Francisco State athletics.

Additionally, the 2016-17 season men’s basketball team finished with a record of 25-6, their best since 1940.

In 2017, Guthrie was named the 9th athletic director at University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, where he was responsible for managing 14 NCAA Division I athletic programs as a member of the Horizon League Conference. [6] He hired men’s basketball coach Will Ryan in 2020. [7] [8]

In 2021, he was hired by former Green Bay chancellor Gary Miller to lead the Akron Zips. [9] [10] [11] [12] During his first year with the Zips, the four teams won MAC Championships, hired Oregon Ducks offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead as the football head coach, [13] [14] and the basketball team won the Mid-American Conference Championship to earn a March Madness berth against UCLA. The John Carroll Blue Streaks football program is the intercollegiate American football team for John Carroll University located in the U.S. state of Ohio. They compete in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) at the Division III level and are members of the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC). The team was established in 1920 and plays its home games at the 5,416 seat Don Shula Stadium. As of the 2016 season, John Carroll has won 11 Conference titles, 4 in their current conference, the OAC. Drew Nystrom serves as the interim head football coach. During the 2022 season, John Carroll will celebrate its 100th season of football.

Mary Ellen Gillespie is a former American college athletics administrator. She previously served as athletic director for the University of Hartford from 2017 to 2019, the University of Wisconsin–Green Bay from 2013 to 2017, and as an associate athletic director at Bowling Green State University from 2006 to 2013. Gillespie graduated from the State University of New York at Plattsburgh with both bachelor's and master's degrees. Gillespie was named athletic director at the University of Hartford on May 23, 2017. On January 16, 2020, it was announced that Gillespie would join the Women's Basketball Coaches Association as a Deputy Director beginning March 2nd, following her resignation as Athletic Director at the University of Hartford in October 2019.

A standout at Superior High School that led the school to a state finals berth in 2014, Lindstrom played college basketball for the University of Wisconsin–Green Bay.
