Charnel Music is an independent record label devoted to putting out eclectic and improvisational music. The label was formed in 1988 by Mason Jones as "Charnel House" [1] and had initially released works by his band Trance. The label's name later changed to "Charnel Music," [1] and went on to release music by acts such as Melt Banana, Merzbow, and The Pain Teens.
An independent record label is a record label that operates without the funding of major record labels. Many artists begin their careers on independent labels.
This is a list of notable events in music that took place in the year 1988.
Mason Jones is a San Francisco-based guitarist, graphic designer, music journalist, audio engineer and independent record label owner. He is best recognized as a founding member of the psychedelic rock act SubArachnoid Space and for the music released under his monikers, such as Dada Fish, Numinous Eye and Trance. In 1988 he founded the music label Charnel Music which specialized in psychedelic, experimental and noise music.
Charnel's first release was Trance's Fatal Blow on cassette. More cassettes releases from Trance as well as other local San Francisco groups followed. The label focused on other projects after the release of the Arrhythmia CD compilation in 1990. [1]
San Francisco, officially the City and County of San Francisco, is the cultural, commercial, and financial center of Northern California. San Francisco is the 13th-most populous city in the United States, and the fourth-most populous in California, with 884,363 residents as of 2017. It covers an area of about 46.89 square miles (121.4 km2), mostly at the north end of the San Francisco Peninsula in the San Francisco Bay Area, making it the second-most densely populated large US city, and the fifth-most densely populated U.S. county, behind only four of the five New York City boroughs. San Francisco is also part of the fifth-most populous primary statistical area in the United States, the San Jose–San Francisco–Oakland, CA Combined Statistical Area.
Heart arrhythmia is a group of conditions in which the heartbeat is irregular, too fast, or too slow. A heart rate that is too fast – above 100 beats per minute in adults – is called tachycardia and a heart rate that is too slow – below 60 beats per minute – is called bradycardia. Many types of arrhythmia have no symptoms. When symptoms are present these may include palpitations or feeling a pause between heartbeats. In more serious cases there may be lightheadedness, passing out, shortness of breath, or chest pain. While most types of arrhythmia are not serious, some predispose a person to complications such as stroke or heart failure. Others may result in cardiac arrest.
Charnel had two sub-labels. The first was Document and Eyewitness, whose sole release was P. Children's Documentation 1987-1992. The other was Circular Reasoning, which was formed in 1995 and put out albums such as Tel Basta's Lickerish and Bohemian Special by The Gay Barbarians and/or the Jaurwars.
Document and Eyewitness is a live album by the post-punk band Wire. It marked the end of the first period of Wire's activity and the end of their association with EMI. The Notre Dame Hall show records Wire after the tour to support 154, tired of playing the same old songs and continually moving forward. Of the seven songs, three were never recorded in-studio by Wire and the rest were captured as B-sides and other ephemeral recordings. Nine of the songs recorded live for the album were reworked and recorded for the band's 2013 album Change Becomes Us.
Charnel ceased their operations in 1999 and was briefly resurrected in 2007 for the CDR releases of Mason Jones' Unreleased Themes For Caged Heat 3000 and Numinous Eyes' The Farthest Thing. [1] The label is currently on an indefinite hiatus. [2]
