Pain Teens was an experimental noise rock band formed in Houston, Texas in 1985 by Scott Ayers and Bliss Blood. [1] The band used tape manipulation, digital delays, sampling, tape cut-ups and other effects in their music. [2] They also included guitar, violin, marimba, saxophone, percussion, and many other musical instruments.

Beginning in 1987, Pain Teens released nine cassette tapes and two LPs on their own Anomie Records label, all of which went out of print. Soon after, they released four LPs for Trance Syndicate Records, an Austin, Texas label run by King Coffey of the band Butthole Surfers. [2] Their eponymous first LP release was re-released by Mason Jones and Charnel Music in 1998. [3]

History

In 1985, Houston residents Bliss Blood and Scott Ayers formed The Pain Teens. [2] The group was signed to King Coffey's Trance Syndicate label for their offbeat-yet-nightmarish psychedelic music—similar to labelmates Crust and Coffey's band, Butthole Surfers. [2]

Drummer Frank Garymartin and bassist Kirk Carr joined the band in 1990. [2]

The Pain Teens broke up in 1995. [2] Blood moved to New York City that year and began playing solo gigs on her ukulele doing 1920s tunes and original music, playing with guitarist Al Street and forming several groups, including The Moonlighters in 1998. The Moonlighters have released four CDs on their own label, ONLIEST Records, and their fifth CD Enchanted was released on WorldSound Records, a Seattle-based label, in July 2009. Ayers still resides in Houston, and has played with a number of other bands since, including Truth Decay and Walking Timebombs. He currently plays with Frog Hair. Garymartin briefly played with Helios Creed, and launched a hip-hop act under the name of Hundred. Kirk Carr died of cancer in May 2008.

Butthole Surfers American rock band

Butthole Surfers is an American rock band formed in San Antonio, Texas, by singer Gibby Haynes and guitarists Paul Leary and Jonathan Grisham in 1981. The band has had numerous personnel changes, but its core lineup of Haynes, Leary, and drummer King Coffey has been consistent since 1983. Teresa Nervosa served as second drummer from 1983 to 1985, 1986 to 1989, and 2009. The band has also employed a variety of bass players, most notably Jeff Pinkus.

Trance Syndicate

Trance Syndicate was an independent record label founded in 1990 by King Coffey, drummer of Austin, TX band the Butthole Surfers. Its first release was Crust's The Sacred Heart of Crust EP. From 1990 to 1999, when the label closed down, Trance Syndicate released albums by several notable Texan bands and artists, including Bedhead, Ed Hall, American Analog Set, Furry Things, …And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead and Roky Erickson.

Bliss Blood is an American musician and songwriter. She has written and recorded two albums with virtuoso guitarist Al Street, five albums with New York jazz band The Moonlighters from 2000 to 2009, and six albums from 1988 to 1995 with Houston noise rock band Pain Teens. She has also recorded with the Melvins and many other groups.

Crust was a musical group from Austin, Texas that was active during the late-1980s and 1990s and was featured on Trance Syndicate Records, a record label run by King Coffey from the Butthole Surfers. The group's members were John Hawkins, Jerry Page, and Richard Smith.

Gloryhole was the last Ed Hall album to feature drummer Kevin Whitley, who had been playing with the band since 1987. Bedhead was an American, Texas-based indie rock band, active from 1991 to 1998. Members consisted of Matt and Bubba Kadane, Tench Coxe (guitar), Kris Wheat (bass), and Trini Martinez (drums). The band released several EPs and three LPs on Trance Syndicate, touring intermittently. Bedhead's music was generally subdued, with three electric guitars and one electric bass guitar over sung or spoken vocals. Allmusic dubbed the group "the quintessential indie rock band," and Tiny Mix Tapes gave their final album Transaction de Novo a perfect 5/5 score.

King Coffey is an American drummer, known for being the drummer of the psychedelic/noise rock band Butthole Surfers and band leader of Drain. He began drumming in a Fort Worth hardcore punk band called The Hugh Beaumont Experience. Around that same time he published a fanzine called Throbbing Cattle. He saw Butthole Surfers for the first time in 1982 at a time when Scott Matthews was their drummer. Coffey replaced him in 1983 and is still the band's official drummer. Coffey founded the independent record label Trance Syndicate. In September 2014, Coffey won "Yard of the Month" in his local neighborhood. He is married to record label executive Craig Stewart.

Sixteen Deluxe American alternative rock band

Sixteen Deluxe is an American alternative rock band from Austin, Texas, United States. They were mainly active in the 1990s, recording initially for Butthole Surfers drummer King Coffey's Trance Syndicate label. They issued one album on Warner Bros. Records and several others on indie labels. Sixteen Deluxe disbanded in 2000, and re-formed in 2010. In 2012, Sixteen Deluxe were inducted into the Austin Chronicle 's Austin Music Hall of Fame.
