The Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN) is a professional organization in Nigeria whose members are certified as qualified tax practitioners or administrators. [1]

Organization

The CITN was formed in February 1982 and chartered by the Federal Government of Nigeria by the enabling Act No. 76 of 1992. [1] Members of the institute may be Accounting, Legal or other professionals who have obtained the relevant tax expertise. The institute provides training and conducts examinations to determine eligibility. [2] The CITN offers an Advanced Diploma in International Taxation to CITN members who work in international tax. [3] The CITN has been criticized for not providing enough training to members at subsidized rates. [4]

Affiliations

The CITN cooperates with the United Kingdom-based Chartered Institute of Taxation. [3] CITN is also affiliated with the South African Institute of Tax Practitioners and the West African Union of Tax Institutes. [5] [6] The CITN has a working relationship with the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN) to promote XBRL recommendations and specifications in Nigeria. [7] The CITN is a member of the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria. [8] The CITN is also a member of the International Tax Directors Forum (ITDF) and the Association of African Tax Institutes (AATI).

In the news

In March 2011, Prince Rasaq Adekunle Quadri, former President of the CITN, was elected the first President of the West African Union of Tax Institutes (WAUTI). WAUTI is the umbrella body of tax Institutes in the region. [9] In May 2011, Sebastian Owuama, President of Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria, attended the annual tax conference of the CITN in Abuja where he called for an end to the squabble between ICAN and the CITN. [10] In June 2011, Sunday Jegede, president of the CITN, was elected first President of the Association of African Tax Institutes (AATI). The AATI was formally inaugurated in South Africa in October 2011 during the Annual Tax Conference of the South Africa Institute of Taxation. [11]

Ibikunle Amosun is a Nigerian politician, former governor of Ogun State and two-term senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. He first served as an elected senator for Ogun Central district of Ogun State, Nigeria from June 2003 to June 2007, and reelected in 2019. After an unsuccessful bid for governor of Ogun State in April 2007, he was elected governor of the state on the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) platform in 2011. He contested again for a second term as governor under the All Progressives Congress and after winning the election, was sworn into office on 29 May 2015.

The Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN) is one of the two professional accountancy associations with regulatory authority in Nigeria, the other being the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN). A consultant offering financial services in Nigeria must be a member of either ANAN or ICAN.

Chief Akintola Williams was a Nigerian accountant. He was the first Nigerian to qualify as a chartered accountant.

The Financial Reporting Council (FRC) of Nigeria, formerly the Nigerian Accounting Standards Board (NASB), is an organization charged with setting accounting standards in Nigeria. On Thursday, 6 May 2021, Shuaibu Adamu Ahmed was inaugurated by the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Adeniyi Adebayo, as the Executive Secretary/Chief Executive Officer of FRC.

The Pan African Federation of Accountants (PAFA) is the regional body that is aimed to represent African professional accountants with one and louder voice, particularly in relating with International Federation of Accountants (IFAC). It was inaugurated in Dakar, Senegal on 5 May 2011.

The Association of Accountancy Bodies in West Africa (ABWA) is a regional organization of the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC). As of 2011 there were ten West African accounting institutes represented in ABWA.

The Nigerian Accounting Association (NAA) is a member driven association of academics in the accountancy profession. It is the successor to the defunct Nigerian Association of Accounting Teachers (NATA). NATA was established in 1972 with the objective of "contributing through research and education, to the improvement of accounting profession and accounting education in Nigeria". The NAA is an academic society aimed at advancement of the accounting discipline and accounting profession in Nigeria. The West African Union of Tax Institutes (WAUTI) is an association formed by the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN) and the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Ghana (CITG) with the objective of developing and promoting the taxation profession in West Africa. A nationally recognized taxation institute or organization in a West African country is eligible for full membership.

The Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) of Nigeria was established in 1990 vide Companies and Allied Matters Act no 1 (CAMA) 1990 as amended, now on Act cap C20 Laws of Federation of Nigeria. Its establishment, structure, and funding are now governed by the Companies and Allied Matters Act 2020 It is an autonomous body charged with the responsibility to regulate the formation and management of companies in Nigeria. It carries out its functions through accredited members of Association of National Accountants of Nigeria, Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria, Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators of Nigeria (ICSAN), and the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA). It is headed by a Registrar-General. Prior to the enactment of CAMA, these activities were carried on under the Companies Act 1968.

The Association of African Tax Institutes (AATI) is an industry association whose aim is, among other things, to provide a platform of collaboration between tax professionals in Africa and to help bridge the divide between tax professionals in the countries of member bodies, their governments and taxpayers.

The South African Institute of Tax Professionals (SAIT) is a recognised professional body focusing solely on taxation. It is a registered professional body under the National Qualifications Framework Act, 2008. The Institute is a professional association of tax professionals regulating tax practitioners in South Africa. SAIT promotes and focuses on the public interest, professional standards, ethics and integrity, albeit promoting the tax industry and its members.

Joseph Oyeyani Makoju served as Special Adviser to the President Goodluck Jonathan of Nigeria under two separate administrations. He was Honorary Adviser on Electric Power to the President/Commander-in-Chief, Federal Republic of Nigeria. He was also the Special Adviser to the President/Chief Executive, Dangote Group, the chairman, Cement Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, as well as West African Power Pool Executive Board. Makoju recently retired as the Group Managing Director/ CEO of the Dangote Cement PLC; a position he has held since April 2018.

Binos Dauda Yaroe is the senator representing Adamawa South Senatorial District of Adamawa State at the Nigerian 9th National Assembly.

Muhammad Mamman Nami is a Nigerian accountant, management professional, tax administrator and public officer. He is the immediate past Executive Chairman of Nigeria's Federal Inland Revenue Service FIRS, the agency responsible for assessing, collecting and accounting for tax and other revenues accruing to the Federal Government of Nigeria. He has almost three (3) decades of practical working experience in Auditing, Tax Management and Advisory and Management Services to clients in the Banking, Manufacturing Services and Public Sectors as well as Non- Profit organizations.

Olukorede Adenowo is a banking professional and is currently the Chief Executive Officer of First Bank United Kingdom, a wholly owned subsidiary of First Bank Nigeria. He was formerly the Chief Executive Officer of Standard Chartered Bank, Nigeria. He was previously the bank's Executive Director of Corporate, Commercial, and Institutional Banking, responsible for Nigeria and West Africa. He is also an executive director on the board of the bank. He was also previously the managing director and chief executive officer of Standard Chartered Bank (SCB) in Gambia and Senegal; the deputy managing director and deputy CEO for SCB, Cameroon, a non-executive director at SCB Gambia and Sierra Leone, and vice president of the Gambia Bankers Association and trustee of the Institute of Bankers of Gambia.
