Chelsea Marie Furlani (born May 18, 1988) is an American-born ice hockey player who became a naturalized Italian citizen. She is known for her successful career with the EV Bozen Eagles in the Italian Hockey League Women (IHLW).
Furlani was born in Colchester, Vermont, to a family of Italian descent; her great-grandfather was from San Costanzo in the Marche region of Italy.[1][2] She began playing ice hockey at a young age.[2]
Furlani played college hockey for the Vermont Catamounts at the University of Vermont, where she served as team captain.[3] Over four seasons, she recorded 49 points (25 goals and 24 assists) in 132 games.[4]
Professional career
After graduating, Furlani signed with the Vienna Flyers in Europe,[5] playing in the EWHL during the 2010–2011 season.[4] After one season, she transferred to the EV Bozen Eagles in Italy.[6] In her first season with the team, she won both the Italian championship and the Italian Cup, and was named the league's top scorer.[1][7] She was retained for the 2012–2013 season,[7] during which the team won the championship again.[8] The Eagles also competed in the EWCC, where Furlani was selected for the semifinal round all-star team despite the team's elimination,[9] and finished fourth in the EWHL final round.[10]
During the 2013–2014 season, the Eagles won the EWHL championship for the first time, with Furlani scoring four of the team's seven goals in the final against the Neuberg Highlanders.[11]
Italian citizenship and national team
Furlani applied for Italian citizenship, and after completing two seasons in the Italian championship, she was invited to join the Italy women's national ice hockey team for friendly matches.[12] However, delays in the citizenship process prevented her from participating in official matches. In August 2015, the Bolzano club wrote to President of the RepublicSergio Mattarella to appeal the situation.[13] In November 2015, she was granted Italian citizenship for special merits,[14] and returned to competition in January 2016.[15]
Coaching career
Furlani has also served in various coaching roles with both the men's and women's teams of EV Bozen.[16]
