Cheryl Heller is an American business strategist and designer. She is the founder of the first Master of Fine Arts (MFA) program in Design for Social Innovation at the School of Visual Arts, President of the design lab "CommonWise", and winner of the AIGA Medal for her contribution to the field of design. [2] [3] [4] She is a Rockefeller Bellagio Fellow, [5] and Heller has been credited as founding the first design department in an advertising agency.[ which? ] [2] Her work focuses on investigating the contributions design has on human health and its impact on society. Education

Heller attended the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, where she studied painting and printmaking. [7] [ failed verification ] She returned to school to earn a bachelor's degree in Fine Arts at Ohio Wesleyan University. [2] After earning her bachelor's degree, she continued to study at Goddard College, where she received her MFA in Creative Writing. [8]

Careers

Heller began her career in advertising at Giardini/Russell in Boston. [9] She co-founded Heller/Breene inside of the WCRS[ expand acronym ] Group. Heller/Breene was a small firm specializing in design, where she was the chairperson and creative director until 1989; two months after her departure, WCRS Group sold the firm Cipriani. [10] [11] [12] She left Heller/Breene to work at Wells Rich Greene BDDP. In 2003, she partnered with entrepreneurs and organizations to further social and environmental projects.[ citation needed ]

After becoming president of the advertising company, she grew the division to $50m in billings when it took off and became an independent entity. She began to help grow businesses from small enterprises into multi-billion dollar global market leaders. Heller has worked as a small businesses consultant, working with businesses, as well as writing about design strategies for businesses. [13] [14] She has taught creativity to leaders and organizations around the world and written about branding. [15]

In 1999, she created the "Ideas that Matter" program for Sappi, which awards grants to designers working on social and environmental projects. [16] Heller is the former board chair and current Adviser to PopTech, [17] a Senior Fellow at the Babson Social Innovation Lab [18] on the Innovation Advisory Board for the Lumina Foundation, and serves as an adviser to DataKind. [19] She is one of the advisors at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and USAID on an initiative in an attempt to integrate Human Centered Design into public health. She has led an initiative to diminish the flow of young people from foster care to homelessness. [20] Heller served as an adviser to Paul Polak and the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum on the exhibit, "Design for the Other 90%." [21] She is a Matrix Award winner for excellence in communication. [22]

MFA Program

Heller was the founding chairperson of the MFA program for Design for Social Innovation in 2011 for the School of Visual Arts. [2] This degree program is recognized as being the first of its kind. [23] It allows students to further develop skills in several fine art skills after they have received their bachelor's degree. It is a three-year program where graduates are working as creative leaders in government, industry, healthcare, technology and global Non-Government Organizations (NGOs). [24]

Steven Heller is an American art director, journalist, critic, author, and editor who specializes in topics related to graphic design.

William Drenttel was a designer, author, publisher, social entrepreneur and foundation executive. In 2012, he was the president of Winterhouse Institute, vice president of communications and design for Teach For All, co-director of the Transform Symposium at the Mayo Clinic Center for Innovation, and the recipient of Rockefeller Foundation support to develop models for design and social change. He was president emeritus of AIGA, a fellow of NYU Institute of the Humanities, a senior faculty fellow and social enterprise fellow at Yale School of Management, and the publisher and editorial director of Design Observer, a website covering design, social innovation, urbanism and visual culture. In 2010, Drenttel was elected to the Art Directors Hall of Fame and the Alliance Graphique Internationale, and was the first Henry Wolf Resident in Graphic Design at the American Academy in Rome. He lectured widely in the U.S. and abroad.

Lorraine Wild is a Canadian-born American graphic designer, writer, art historian, and teacher. She is an AIGA Medalist and principal of Green Dragon Office, a design firm that focuses on collaborative work with artists, architects, curators, editors and publishers. Wild is based in Los Angeles, California.
