Cheryl Lynne Selby (born December 4,1960) is an American politician. She serveed as the mayor of Olympia,Washington from 2015 until 2023.
Selby was born and raised in Seattle. She spent weekends and summer days at her grandparents' cabin at Lake Cushman growing up. Selby studied textiles at Seattle Pacific University and worked at Brittania Jeans during the 1980s. [1] She moved to Olympia in 1994 to take advantage of the school district. Selby worked in the parks and recreation department for two years. Selby served as a volunteer in the Olympia School District as an Art Partner,Parent-Teacher Association President,Campaign volunteer,and worked on the successful 2003 Bond Campaign. In 2003,she worked in the Probation Services Department in charge of the Safe and Sober Driving Program. [2] Selby owned a small clothing business in Olympia called Vivala,which opened in 2006. [3] [1] She moved it to a location near the Farmer's Market in 2009 and remarried and purchased a new home the same year. [1]
Selby was elected to the Olympia City Council at position 4. In November 2015,Selby was elected mayor of Olympia,succeeding Stephen Buxbaum who did not run for re-election. She received 70.8 percent of the vote over Marco Rosaire Rossi. Selby,who ran on a platform of redirecting state revenue back to the city,became the third female mayor in the city's history. [3] In May 2018,she was the subject of a protest outside her home,which she blamed on an anarchist group. [4] During her first term in office,homelessness became a major issue in Olympia. Selby authorized construction of a "tiny house village" with room for about 40 people and a sanctioned camp to house 120 people in tents. [5] In November 2019,Selby was re-elected as mayor,receiving 8,614 votes to 7,612 from Nathaniel Jones. [6]
Selby was the focus of national media attention in June 2020,after a group affiliated with Black Lives Matter spray-painted her front porch and door. At some point,a man holding a paddle told the group to leave and threatened them if they would not comply. Selby,who was not home at the time,originally compared the incident to domestic terrorism [7] but later said "I know that what happened to me was not domestic terrorism.”She apologised and said “Once I stepped back and calmed down,I realized that those words were an overreaction to what I'd seen in the video.” [8] While she said she agreed with many of the protesters' demands for police reform,Selby stated the Olympia Police Department had a good reputation and called for patience. Christine Callaghan Quinn is an American politician. A member of the Democratic Party,she formerly served as the Speaker of the New York City Council. The third person to hold this office,she was the first female and first openly gay speaker. She ran to succeed Michael Bloomberg as the city's mayor in the 2013 mayoral election,but lost the Democratic primary. Quinn is a political contributor on CNN and MSNBC.

The Statue of Lenin is a 16 ft (5 m) bronze statue of Russian communist revolutionary Vladimir Lenin in the Fremont neighborhood of Seattle,Washington,United States. It was created by Bulgarian-born Slovak sculptor Emil Venkov and initially put on display in the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic in 1988,the year before the Velvet Revolution. After the revolutions of 1989 and dissolution of the Soviet Union,a wave of de-Leninization in Eastern Europe brought about the fall of many monuments in the former Soviet sphere. In 1993,the statue was bought by an American who had found it lying in a scrapyard. He brought it home with him to Washington State but died before he could carry out his plans to formally display it.
Port Militarization Resistance (PMR) is an anti-war movement in the United States. The movement began in May 2006,in Olympia,Washington,but also has chapters in Tacoma,Washington,Grays Harbor,Washington,and the Mid-Atlantic region. Port Militarization Resistance is also the name of the strategy employed by this movement. Adherents of the PMR strategy advocate an end to the Iraq War and the War in Afghanistan to be accomplished through making civilian-owned ports inaccessible to the military,with less emphasis on persuading elected officials to abandon the war. PMR organized high-profile protests at the Port of Olympia and the Port of Tacoma in 2006,2007,2008,and 2009.
Bruce Allen Harrell is an American politician and attorney serving as the 57th and current mayor of Seattle,Washington. He was a member of the Seattle City Council from 2008 to 2020. In October 2009,President Barack Obama appointed her United States Attorney for the Western District of Washington. She held that position until September 2014.

Beginning on May 29,2020,demonstrators took to the streets throughout the city for marches and sit-ins,often of a peaceful nature but which also devolved into riots. Participants expressed opposition to systemic racism,police brutality and violence against people of color.

The zone,originally covering two intersections at the corners of Cal Anderson Park and the roads leading up to them,was established on June 8,2020,by people protesting the May 2020 killing of George Floyd by a police officer in Minneapolis,Minnesota. The zone was cleared of occupants by police on July 1,2020.
