Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly election 2013 was held in two phases on 11 and 19 November in Chhattisgarh state of India. The result was announced on 8 December. [1] Incumbent ruling party BJP and Chief Minister Raman Singh retained the majority in assembly and formed government consequently for the third time. [2] [3] [4]

Chhattisgarh Central-east state in India

Chhattisgarh is one of the 29 states of India, located in the centre-east of the country. It is the tenth-largest state in India, with an area of 135,191 km2 (52,198 sq mi). With a 2011 population of 25.5 million, Chhattisgarh is the 16th-most populated state in the country. A resource-rich state, it is a source of electricity and steel for the country, accounting for 15% of the total steel produced. Chhattisgarh is one of the fastest-developing states in India.

Raman Singh Indian politician

Raman Singh is an Indian politician who was the 2nd Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh from 7 December 2003 to 16 December 2018. He is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party. He is also an ENT ayurvedic doctor. He is also the longest serving CM of Chhattisgarh for 15 years.

Polls

Voter-verified paper audit trail (VVPAT) along with EVMs was used in 1 assembly seat in Chhattisgarh elections. [5] [6] The first phase in the Naxal-affected areas of Bastar, consisting 18 constituencies, voted on 11 November and had a 75.53% voter turnout. The second phase in the other 72 constituencies was held on 19 November and had a 74.7% turnout. [7]

Voter verifiable paper audit trail (VVPAT) or verifiable paper record (VPR) is a method of providing feedback to voters using a ballotless voting system. A VVPAT is intended as an independent verification system for voting machines designed to allow voters to verify that their vote was cast correctly, to detect possible election fraud or malfunction, and to provide a means to audit the stored electronic results. It contains the name of the candidate and symbol of the party/individual candidate.

Naxalite Left wing political party

A Naxal or Naxalite is a member of any political organisation that claims the legacy of the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist), founded in Calcutta in 1969. Communist Party of India (Maoist) is the largest existing political group in that lineage today in India.

Security

The Hindu reported that 32 battalions of central paramilitaries were added to the 117,000 security force personnel in the area. Another almost 25,000 Chhattisgarh Police were stations in south Chhattisgarh. As a result, the Gond tribal region would consist of approximately 143,000 armed security personnel. The Hindu stated that after the mobilization of 600 companies of paramilitary forces in the tribal region, it was the "one of the most militarized zones in the world." [8]

The Hindu is an Indian daily newspaper, headquartered in Chennai. It was started as a weekly in 1878 and became a daily in 1889. It is one of the Indian newspapers of record and the second most circulated English-language newspaper in India, after The Times of India with average qualifying sales of 1.21 million copies as of Jan–Jun 2017.

Results

Results were declared on 8 December 2013. Bharatiya Janata Party won 49 seats while Indian National Congress won 39 seats. One Independent and one Bahujan Samaj Party candidate also won. BJP retained majority in state legislative assembly for consequently third time and Raman Singh sworn in as a Chief Minister. [2] [9]

Rajesh Munat Indian politician

Rajesh Munat is an Indian politician from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He has been elected in 3 Assembly elections from the seat of West constituency in Raipur. Munat was born in the village of Mandsour in Malwa district, Madhya Pradesh. He has been living in Raipur since his childhood. His father's name is late Shri Punamchand Ji Munat. Shri Rajesh Munat was first elected to Vidhan Sabha in a by-election in Raipur West constituency in year 2003 as a supported by Bharatiya Janata Party. He is cabinet minister in the Bharatiya Janata Party-governed Indian state of Chhattisgarh Pradesh, as PWD minister he is responsible for law and order.

Salwa Judum

Salwa Judum was a militia that was mobilised and deployed as part of anti-insurgency operations in Chhattisgarh, India, aimed at countering Naxalite violence in the region. The militia, consisting of local tribal youth, received support and training from the Chhattisgarh state government. It has been outlawed and banned by a Supreme Court court order, but continues to exist in the form of Armed Auxiliary Forces, District Reserve Group and other vigilante groups.

The Indian general election, 2014 was held to constitute the 16th Lok Sabha, electing members of parliament for all 543 parliamentary constituencies. Running in nine phases from 7 April to 12 May 2014, it was the longest election in the country's history. According to the Election Commission of India, 814.5 million people were eligible to vote, with an increase of 100 million voters since the last general election in 2009, making it the largest ever election in the world. Around 23.1 million or 2.7% of the total eligible voters were aged 18–19 years. A total of 8,251 candidates contested for the 543 Lok Sabha seats. The average election turnout over all nine phases was around 66.38%, the highest ever in the history of Indian general elections.

April 2010 Maoist attack in Dantewada

The April 2010 Dantewada Maoist attack was an 6 April 2010 ambush by Naxalite-Maoist insurgents from the Communist Party of India (Maoist) near Chintalnar village in Dantewada district, Chhattisgarh, India, leading to the killing of 76 CRPF policemen and 8 Maoists — the deadliest attack by the Maoists on Indian security forces.

Soni Sori is an Adivasi school teacher turned political leader of Aam Aadmi Party in Sameli village of Dantewada in south Bastar, Chhattisgarh, India. She was arrested by the Delhi Police's Crime Branch for Chhattisgarh Police in 2011 on charges of acting as a conduit for Maoists. During her imprisonment, she was tortured and sexually assaulted by Chhattisgarh state police. By April 2013, the Indian Courts had acquitted her in six of the eight cases filed against her due to lack of evidence. After release from prison, Sori began campaigning for the rights of those caught up in the conflict between Maoist insurgents and the government, in particular criticising police violence against tribespeople in the region.

The 2012 Gujarat legislative assembly elections were held in the Indian state of Gujarat in December 2012 for all 182 members of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly. Incumbent Chief Minister Narendra Modi of Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP), in power since 2002, was running for his fourth term. The leader of the opposition was Shaktisinh Gohil of the Indian National Congress (INC).

Legislative Assembly elections in India were conducted for nine legislative assemblies in 2013. Voting in Chhattisgarh was held in two phases on 11 November and 19 November 2013. The Election Commission of India (ECI) successfully conducted elections in Tripura, Meghalaya and Nagaland in February and in Karnataka on 5 May. The elections in Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan were conducted in December while the counting that took place on 8 December showed a clear majority for BJP in the states of Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, while Congress retained the state of Mizoram and Delhi got a hung assembly, with no single party getting a clear majority.

2008 Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly election

The Chhattisgarh legislative assembly election, 2008 was held on 14 November 2008 and 20 November 2008, to select the 90 members of the Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly. The results of the election were announced on 8 December. Incumbent Chief Minister Raman Singh and his Bharatiya Janata Party won the elections.

The Delhi Legislative Assembly election was held on 4 December 2013, with the result announced on 8 December resulting in formation of the Fifth Legislative Assembly of Delhi.

Rajasthan Legislative Assembly elections, 2013 was held in Indian state of Rajasthan on 1 December 2013. Results were announced on 8 December. The incumbent ruling party Indian National Congress, led by the Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, lost the elections to Vasundhara Raje-led BJP, who was being touted as the next incumbent.

2013 Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly election

A Legislative Assembly election was held on 25 November 2013 in Madhya Pradesh, India, with the result announced on 8 December. Along with other provincial elections, these were the first five elections in which the Election Commission of India (ECI) implemented a "None of the above" (NOTA) voting option, allowing the electorate to register a neutral vote but not to outright reject candidates. In a first, the Election Commission of India also appointed Central Awareness Observers, whose main task was to oversee voter awareness and facilitation.

Abhishek Singh is an Indian politician from the Bharatiya Janata Party. He has been a member of the Lok Sabha, the lower house of the Indian Parliament representing Rajnandgaon, since 2014. He is the son of former Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh, Raman Singh.

2014 Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly election

The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly election, 2014 was held in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir in five phases from 25 November – 20 December 2014. Voters elected 87 members to the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, which ends its six-year term on 19 January 2015. The results were declared on 23 December 2014. Voter-verified paper audit trail (VVPAT) along with EVMs were used in 3 assembly seats out of 87 in Jammu Kashmir elections.

2018 Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly election

The 2018 Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly election was held to elect members to the Legislative Assembly of the Indian State of Chhattisgarh. The election was held in two phases for a total of 90 seats; the first for 18 seats in South Chhattisgarh was held on 12 November 2018, and the second for the remaining 72 were held on 20 November.
