Chin Hoong Fong (22 February 1935 - 19 March 2018) was a seed scientist who pioneered the storage of recalcitrant seeds in the 1970s. [1] He was the Honorary Research Fellow of Bioversity International and Professor Emeritus at the Department of Crop Science at the Universiti Putra Malaysia. He served on the Board of Trustees of the International Board of Plant Genetic Resources (IBPGR), now Bioversity International (1987-1992), the Advisory Committee on Seed Storage, and the Committee of the Svalbard Global Seed Vault, [2] and he chaired the Technical Committee on Seed Storage of the International Seed Testing Association (ISTA). [3]
Chin was brought up in an urban agriculture setting on Jalan Ampang in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. His family reared chickens and they had five to six different species of fruit trees, flowering plants and vegetables. He recalled that his general interest in agriculture increased when he joined his school's science society. [3]
Chin started his schooling at age 11 at the Methodist Boys School after World War II. [4]
In 1955, after completing his secondary school education, Chin told his mother that he wanted to further his studies in agricultural sciences at the University of Melbourne in Australia. He did his matriculation at the University High School in Melbourne and then took up agricultural science in the University of Melbourne, graduating with a Bachelor of Agricultural Science in 1960.[ citation needed ]
In 1961, he started work as a lecturer at the College of Agriculture Serdang, known today as Universiti Putra Malaysia. While working, he obtained his master's degree and PhD in Agricultural Science from the University of Melbourne. In 1973, he returned to serve in UPM. He was appointed associate professor in 1975, Professor in 1981 and Professor Emeritus in 1996 by UPM. In 1994, Chin was awarded the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Agricultural Science by University of Melbourne in recognition of his contributions to the University of Melbourne and international agriculture.
Chin was also one of the founding Editors-in-Chief of Pertanika journal. He was instrumental in the initial establishment of Pertanika and served as Editor-in-Chief of Pertanika from 1983 to 1996.
Between 1993 and 2013, he has contributed 1,360 books from his private collection including 13 books written or edited by him. [5]

It was founded in July 1897, making it one of the oldest schools in Malaysia. It is known as MBS and its students are known as MBSians. The school is also known as Horley School, a reference to one of its principals, Rev. William E. Horley, who was responsible for changing and giving the school its present name from the previous name of Anglo-Tamil School. The name Horley School has been widely misunderstood as a reference to marble, which is also called Horley in Chinese, a game that was popular amongst its students then. It is noted for its library, which attracts visits from many other schools.
Sultan Idris Shah Serdang Hospital, previously known as the Serdang Hospital, is a government-funded multi-specialty tertiary district general hospital located in Sepang District, Selangor, Malaysia. Ahmad Samsuri bin Mokhtar, better known as Dr. Sam, is a Malaysian politician, aerospace engineer and lecturer who has served as the 15th Menteri Besar of Terengganu and Member of the Terengganu State Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Ru Rendang since May 2018, Member of Parliament (MP) for Kemaman since December 2023 and group Chairman for Terengganu Incorporated. He is a member of the Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS), a component party of the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition. He has also served as one of the Vice Presidents of PAS since June 2019. He also served as the 1st Treasurer-General of PN from November 2020 to his resignation in December 2024.
Ahmad Zaharin Aris FASc is an academician and professor of hydrochemistry. He was appointed as a professor at the age of 33 and as a senior professor at the age of 36. He was the Dean of the Faculty of Environmental Studies, Universiti Putra Malaysia from 2016 until 2020. On 1 March 2020, the faculty merged with the Faculty of Forestry to form Faculty of Forestry and Environment. He is then appointed by UPM as the 3rd director of International Institute of Aquaculture and Aquatic Sciences (I-AQUAS), a research institute that upgraded from the Marine Science Centre on 15 December 2017.
Biswajeet Pradhan is a spatial scientist, modeller, author and who is now working as a Distinguished Professor and the founding Director of the Centre for Advanced Modelling and Geo-spatial Information Systems (CAMGIS), Faculty of Engineering and IT at the University of Technology Sydney, Australia. He is working primarily in the fields of remote sensing, geographic information systems (GIS), complex modelling, machine learning and Artificial intelligence (AI) based algorithms and their application to natural hazards, natural resources and environmental problems. Many of his research outputs were put into practice. His research platform is mainly Asia and Australia, and he has been sharing his findings worldwide. He is also a permanent resident of Australia and Malaysia.
