The China Bible Seminary (CBS) is a Protestant school which trains pastors and leaders for the churches in Hong Kong and China, and missionaries for Asia and around the world. There are three campuses: the Main Campus in Yuen Long, New Territories, Hong Kong; the Tsim Sha Tsui Education Centre in Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon, Hong Kong; and the campus in North America. [1] [2] [3] [4]
On September 17, 1930, the "Chinese Women's Seminary", was founded in Shanghai Jiang-wan by Reverend Ruth M. Brittain and about ten devoted Christian ladies of Chinese and Western background. It was an independent Protestant school without any missionary affiliation and admitted only female students. [5] [6] [2]
In 1938, male students were also admitted, and the school was renamed "China Bible Seminary". Classes were offered even as the country went through the Second World War. [6]
In 1939, the scminary was registered as a non-profit organization in New Jersey, U.S.A. [6] [7]
In 1950, the seminary ceased operations. The graduates of the school later spread to different provinces of China and overseas. [6]
In September 1964, the seminary resumed operations in Hong Kong. Its campus and student dormitories were located in Tsim Sha Tsui. [5] [6]
In 1968, the first group of Diploma students graduated from the school. [6]
In 1978, the first batch of Bachelor of Theology students graduated. [6]
In September 1987, the Certificate Course in Biblical Studies was established. [6]
From 1995 to 2000, more programs were founded, including the Associate of Arts in Christian Studies, the Master of Ministry and the Master of Christian Studies. [6]
In 2007, the seminary purchased a piece of land of over 28,000 square feet in Ngau Tam Mei, Yuen Long, New Territories for building a new campus, and moved to the new site in December 2014. The original campus in Tsim Sha Tsui was then named as "Tsim Sha Tsui Education Center", used for training lay Christians for ministry. [5] [8] [6] [9]
In 2009, the school implemented the Master of Divinity course, followed by the Bachelor of Biblical Studies in 2011, and M. Div. Degree for university graduates in 2015. [6]
In 2025, China Bible Seminary celebrated its 95th anniversary. [10]
China Bible Seminary offers courses in full-time ministry, pastoral training and lay leader preparation. It trains pastors and lay leaders for the Church in Hong Kong and China, and missionaries who serve in Asia and around the world. [1] [2] [11]
In 2014, forty years after reopening in Hong Kong, China Bible Seminary adopted a new logo. The Chinese character "中" in the name of the seminary is depicted with an upright cross and an open Bible, expressing the spirit of the seminary to "Exalt Christ and Preach the Word!". The colors used are dark brown and gray. The former represents wood and the latter represents stone, which are the main building materials used in the new temple revealed in Ezekiel 40-43. This expresses the school's wish to "become holy and useful to the Lord". [2] [12]
The China Bible Seminary North America Ministries has offices in USA (Seattle) and Canada (Vancouver). [7] [15] It offers the Equipping Believers Certificate Program, and over ten courses. [16] The faculty include 4 seminary lecturers and 3 guest lecturers. [17]
