Chokehold is a Canadian vegan straight edge hardcore punk band from Hamilton, Ontario. They were active from 1990 to 1996, and came together again for a reunion tour in 2015, and five dates in Japan in September 2016. [1] [2] They released their third album in 2019. [3]

History

Chokehold was formed in 1990 in Hamilton. [4] Their first release More Than Ever was in 1991. This was followed in 1992 by a split EP with Crisis of Faith and the Life Goes On EP. [5] Their rise in popularity paralleled that of other vegan straight edge bands such as Earth Crisis, and hardline bands like Vegan Reich and Raid.

In 1993 Chokehold released the Prison of Hope LP through American label Conquer the World Records and sounded their own record label Structure Records to release music by Florida band Bloodlet. [6] They released their next EP, 1994's Instilled, on Philadelphia's Bloodlink Records. This EP featured some of their most political material to date, notably the anti-religious song "Anchor", the anti-homophobia song "Mindset", and their manifesto on Human/Earth/Animal Liberation "Burning Bridges".

They followed this in 1995 with their second LP, Content With Dying. This album contained "Not a Solution", a vehemently pro-choice hardcore song.

They signed in 1996 to Germany's Mad Mob Records and recorded four new songs, which were to be released as a split CD with Feeding the Fire. But, after a European tour in 1996, the band decided to break up. They played their last show in March at the New Bedford Festival in Massachusetts. [7] These four songs were released as a self-titled EP on Jawk Records the following year. [8] Rhythm of Sickness Records posthumously released a split 12" vinyl with Left For Dead; Redstar Records later released one of their unreleased covers on the compilation The Sound and the Fury. [8] [9] Members went on to play in such bands as Brutal Knights, Left for Dead, Haymaker, Our War, SeventyEightDays and Funerary. [10] [11] [12]

In 2015, remixed versions of the band's albums Prison of Hope and Content with Dying were re-released. [13] The band reunited and began touring in support of the new releases. Comments[ vague ] by a band member and a subsequent violent confrontation at their first performance in Toronto led to allegations[ vague ] of racism and transphobia, which were denied by the band members and their label. Buried Alive is a hardcore punk/metalcore band from Buffalo, New York that existed in the late 1990s and was signed to Victory Records. The band featured the now current singer of Terror, Scott Vogel, who had previously sang in Slugfest and Despair, and played drums in Cinderblock and Fadeaway.

Paul Andrew Waggoner is the lead guitarist of American progressive metal band Between the Buried and Me. A fan of progressive music, he is heavily inspired by John Petrucci, Pat Metheny, Allan Holdsworth and Steve Vai, amongst others. He formerly played guitar in the metalcore bands, From Here On and Prayer for Cleansing. He had also played live guitar as needed for Lamb of God between 2010 and 2014.

Surprise Attack Records, sometimes called SA Mob is an independent record label based in Philadelphia, although the bands are from Miami, Elkview, Erie, and even Adelaide, Australia. Surprise Attack Records signs Hardcore punk bands. In the early 2000s, the record label had close affiliations with Canadian record labels Goodfellow Records and Redstar Records.

Cursed was a Canadian hardcore punk band formed in 2001 and dissolved in 2008. It featured members from Montreal, Toronto, and Hamilton of various other Canadian DIY bands such as Haymaker, Left for Dead, The Swarm aka Knee Deep in the Dead, Acrid, Ruination, The Black Hand, Countdown to Oblivion, At the Mercy of Inspiration, Shallow North Dakota, Crux of Aux, Quest for Fire and Burning Love.

Chore were a Canadian post-hardcore band from Dunnville, Ontario.

Herod is an American heavy metal band. The band was formed in 2000 in Buffalo, New York, United States, by Jesse Benker and Mike Jeffers, formerly of the band Dead to the World. Their first release was Sinner's in the Eyes of an Angry God in 2001, followed by Execution Protocol in early 2002, through Too Damn Hype Records. In 2003, the band was signed by Lifeforce Records. Since being signed, the band has released two albums with Lifeforce, the first being For Whom the Gods Would Destroy in 2004. Jason Russo replaced vocalist Judah Nero in 2005. Shortly afterward the band went into the studio to record their second album with Lifeforce Records, Rich Man's War, Poor Man's Fight, with producer Doug White. The record was released in March 2006. In late 2008, Herod joined Dark Harvest Records and began recording their label debut, Curse of the King, and follow up Self Titled EP.

Grade is a melodic hardcore band from Burlington, Ontario, often credited as pioneers in blending metallic hardcore with the honesty and melody of emo, and - most notably - the alternating screaming/singing style later popularized by bands like Poison the Well and Hawthorne Heights. Formed in 1994, Grade found inspiration in the hardcore bands Integrity and Chokehold. By 1995, however, they had discovered Indian Summer and Rye Coalition and began developing the sound and style for which they had become known.

Morning Again is an American metalcore band from Florida. They were known for their metallic sound as well as for their straight edge, vegan, anti-religious and anti-government ideals. The band was a "sister band" to Culture, often switching members after one had left the other. Several members went on to play in other bands such as As Friends Rust and Dead Blue Sky. The band was originally from Cooper City, Florida, but moved to Coral Springs in 1998 before breaking up later that year. After playing several reunion shows over the years, the band released a new EP in 2018.

The Great American Steak Religion was a Canadian independent record label which released many notable hardcore records from the likes of Shotmaker, His Hero Is Gone, and Chokehold during the 1990s. Originally based in Ottawa at 5 Arlington Avenue, founder Yannick Lorrain moved to Quebec City, and then to Montreal, taking the label with him. In 2004, the last release under this label was issued: Union Of Uranus' discography titled To This Bearer Of Truth. Many of the releases were issued only on vinyl and were etched with the word "Verse" and then a number, hence the tagging of each release as such.

The Cleanest War is the debut extended play by American metallic hardcore band Morning Again. It was released on May 15, 1996, by American record label Conquer the World Records, initially on compact disc, and subsequently on 12" vinyl and digitally.

Kid Gorgeous is an American metalcore band from Buffalo, New York, United States. The group features a conglomerate mix of members from past and current bands Buried Alive (band), Every Time I Die and Anterrabae. Their first album, Friday Night Knife Fight, was released in May 2001. Their second studio album, This Feeling Gets Old, came out in June 2003. Both efforts were released on Southern California indie label Uprising Records. The band originally called it quits in 2003 with their last show being with Snapcase and Every Time I Die in November of that year. With a couple one-off reunion shows since then, the band has recently resurfaced with news in March 2010 that they were going to record and tour briefly in the summer. The band started recording an EP in December 2010 at GCR Audio in Buffalo, New York with Jay Zubricky and debuted two of the songs at their show with Every Time I Die on December 29, 2010. Subsequently, on December 30, 2010, the band released the song "Mermaid With A Switchblade" via their Facebook and Myspace pages. On February 1, 2012, Eulogy Recordings announced that it will be releasing the EP titled "Blue Romance" which includes three new tracks, a re-recorded classic, and a cover on June 5, 2012. It was announced via the band's Twitter and Facebook pages that Every Time I Die frontman Keith Buckley has lent vocals to a cover of Judas Priest's "Living After Midnight" which will be a bonus track on the EP.

Disembodied is an American metalcore band formed in 1995 in Minneapolis. Originally featuring Aaron Weseman (vocals), Justin James Kane (drums), Tara Johnson (bass), Joel Andrew Johnson (guitar) and Mario Diaz de León (guitar), the band split up in 1999 and reunited in 2008 and 2018, respectively.
