Chris Gascoyne (born 31 January 1968) [1] is an English film, theatre and television actor. He is best known for his role as Peter Barlow in the soap opera Coronation Street . Making his first appearance in December 2000 during a live, 50 minute episode for the show's 40th anniversary.
Gascoyne was born on 31 January 1968 in Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire, England and grew up in a working class family. [2] Both his grandfathers worked down the mines and his father Derrik was a greengrocer and florist who later became a milkman. [3]
Gascoyne also spent a significant part of his early life in Gateshead in the North East living with his mother and grandparents. He was very close to his grandfather, Tom and Irish grandmother, Kitty. They later came to live with the family in Sutton-in-Ashfield after his grandmother was diagnosed with early onset dementia and his grandfather's failing health. [4]
As a teenager, Gascoyne later became a member of the Central Workshop in Nottingham and subsequently gained a place at the Central School of Speech and Drama in Swiss Cottage, London, from 1989-1992. Other notable actors in his year were: Susan Lynch, Julian Rhind-tutt and Danny Sapani. During his time as a student at Central, he worked as a supermarket shelf stacker and Pizza Delivery driver in Hammersmith. [5]
Gascoyne began his career at the Central Workshop and at the age of 15 where he began appearing in such shows as The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole, The Growing Pains of Adrian Mole and The Bill [6]
One of his earliest roles was as Judd on Central TV's children's program Murphy's Mob, also performing in the Central Television series for schools Starting Out , released in 1988. Since then, he has acted in numerous television dramas, including playing opposite Warren Clarke in The Locksmith and Timothy Spall in The Thing About Vince . He has also had roles in Between the Lines and made an appearance in Murdoch Mysteries as David Jennings. [2] An appearance in Casualty is also another one of Gascoyne's credits. [2] He also appeared as Fusilier Tony Rossi in Soldier Soldier . [2] [7] While working in film Gascoyne played the part of a New York Cop in My Last Five Girlfriends starring Michael Sheen.[ citation needed ]
Gascoyne was cast in the role of Peter Barlow, the seventh actor to portray the role, in Coronation Street . [2] His original spell occurred between 2000 and 2003, before making a brief return in 2007. During his absence after leaving in 2003, Gascoyne joined the cast of BBC drama New Street Law as Al Ware in 2006. [7] He returned the following year on a permanent basis, making his on-screen return on 30 October 2008. [8] Gascoyne took a four-month break in July 2012, [9] before leaving at the end of his contract in November 2014. [10] He returned briefly in 2015 following the death of his co-star Anne Kirkbride, [11] [12] with Gascoyne stating, "Coming back was like a healing process, we laughed a lot". [12] He returned once again on a permanent basis in October 2016. [13]
On 10 July 2023, ITV confirmed that Gascoyne will be leaving the soap after playing Peter Barlow after 23 years, to pursue other acting projects and to spend more time with his family.
Gascoyne has worked extensively in the theatre, accepting his first professional role at the age of 18, at the Nottingham Playhouse. After graduating from Central, he joined the Richard Ayre Company at The National Theatre where he performed in The David Hare Trilogy, including Racing Demon, Murmuring Judges and the Absence of War (alongside John Thaw, Michael Bryant and Mark Strong). [14] He appeared twice at The Royal Court Theatre first playing the role of Patsy in David Storey's The Changing Room, as part of the Royal Court Classic Season. He then went on to play the lead role of Jimmy, a cab driver, in Simon Stephens first play Bluebird (directed by Gordon Anderson). He also played the lead part in a new play titled The Ribcage at The Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester (also directed by Gordon Anderson).
More recently, Gascoyne played Ray Say in Jim Cartwright's classic, The Rise and Fall of Little Voice at the West Yorkshire Playhouse/ Birmingham Repertory Theatre. He then went on to play Clov in Samuel Beckett's Endgame directed by Domonic Hill in a co-production between the Glasgow Citizen's theatre and HOME Manchester, playing opposite fellow Coronation Street actor, David Nielson. [15] Gascoyne was quoted saying: "Beckett is for everyone, not just middle-class intellectuals." [15]
Gascoyne married Caroline Harding in 2003. He has three children. [2]

Kenneth "Ken" Barlow is a fictional character from the British ITV soap opera Coronation Street, played by William Roache. He was created by Tony Warren as one of Coronation Street's original characters and December 2020 marked Ken's 60th anniversary onscreen. He debuted in the soap's first episode on 9 December 1960. Having appeared in the role continuously since that date, Roache is the longest-serving actor in a televised soap opera, and was honoured at the 2010 Guinness World Records ceremony for the achievement, having surpassed actor Don Hastings from the American soap opera As the World Turns, who previously held this title. Roache stated in 2010 that he had no plans to leave the role and would remain in Coronation Street for as long as the producers would have him. In November 2020, Roache was again presented with the Guinness World Record for the longest-serving TV soap star in the world for his six decades in Coronation Street.
Anne Kirkbride was an English actress, best known for her long-running role as Deirdre Barlow in the ITV soap Coronation Street, which she played for 42 years from 1972 to 2014. For this role, she posthumously received the Outstanding Achievement Award at the 2015 British Soap Awards.

Norris Cole was a fictional character from the British ITV soap opera Coronation Street, played by Malcolm Hebden. He made his first screen appearance during the episode broadcast on 11 March 1994. Hebden had previously played the role of Carlos, Mavis Riley's Spanish boyfriend, in ten episodes in 1974 to 1975. Norris appeared on a recurring basis, until he was written out in April 1997 by Brian Park. However, two years later; the character was reintroduced on a regular basis. Hebden continued to appear on the soap until December 2017 after suffering a heart attack. Following his recovery, he made several guest returns, before his retirement from acting in January 2021 due to his health. The character was killed off-screen on 15 September 2021.
Adam Barlow is a fictional character from the British ITV soap opera Coronation Street, played by actor Sam Robertson. He made his first appearance on-screen on 14 January 2001. Peter Barlow is a fictional character from the British ITV soap opera Coronation Street, played by Chris Gascoyne from 2000 to 2023. The character of Peter was born on screen during an episode broadcast on 5 April 1965, he was born along with his twin sister Susan to parents Ken and Valerie Barlow. Gascoyne made his first appearance in the role during the 40th anniversary live episode airing on 8 December 2000. Gascoyne left the role in 2003 and returned in 2007 for a brief stint before returning full-time in 2008. In January 2014 it was confirmed that Gascoyne would be leaving once again. He returned briefly in 2007 when his adoptive sister Tracy Barlow was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of Charlie Stubbs. He returned for good in 2008 with five-year-old Simon, whom he had by Lucy; who had since died from breast cancer. Peter began a relationship with Leanne Battersby and they married during the 50th anniversary episode; however, they divorced in 2012 after Peter's affair with Carla Connor was discovered. Peter later went on to marry Carla, and then had an affair with much younger Tina McIntyre. Peter was framed for Tina's murder by Rob Donovan and upon his release from prison, his marriage to Carla broke down and he left Weatherfield.
Luke Strong is a fictional character from the British ITV soap opera Coronation Street. Portrayed by Craig Kelly, the character appeared throughout 2009. Luke took over Carla Connor's share of the Underworld factory with Tony Gordon. He knew Carla's deceased husband, Paul Connor.

Lewis Archer is a fictional character from the British soap opera Coronation Street, played by Nigel Havers. The character was created and introduced as a love interest for Audrey Roberts. Executive producer Kim Crowther revealed the team wanted an actor who was slightly younger than Audrey and who was very charming. Various actors were considered for the part, but the casting director suggested Havers as she knew he was a big fan of the show. The actor said he could not turn down a chance to appear in Coronation Street as his character had an interesting story arc. Havers was contracted until July 2010 and he made his debut as Lewis in the episode broadcast on 18 December 2009.

William Patrick Roache is an English actor, best known for playing Ken Barlow in the ITV soap opera Coronation Street. Roache is the longest-serving cast member in Coronation Street, having appeared in the show continuously since its first broadcast on 9 December 1960. He is listed in the Guinness World Records as the longest-serving television star in a continuous role.
Rob Donovan is a fictional character from the British ITV soap opera Coronation Street, portrayed by Marc Baylis. Introduced as the brother of Carla Connor, he made his first screen appearance during the episode broadcast on 9 July 2012. It was announced in June 2014 that Baylis would be leaving the role after two years following his involvement in a storyline where Rob was responsible for murdering Tina McIntyre. Rob departed on 5 November 2014. It was reported in August 2015 that Baylis would be reprising the role as Rob, and he returned to filming in October for a short storyline. His return aired on 4 December 2015 and he departed a month later, on 4 January 2016. He returned again on 19 April 2017 and departed on 8 May 2017.
