Christopher Laird Hurst (born July 9,1987) is an American journalist,former news anchor and former member of the Virginia House of Delegates for the state's 12th district.
Hurst entered politics following the high-profile 2015 on-air murders of his fiancee,Alison Parker,and her co-worker,Adam Ward. He made gun control one of his top legislative priorities. [2] In 2021,he was defeated for reelection by Jason Ballard.
Hurst was born in Philadelphia,Pennsylvania. He attended Emerson College from 2006 to 2009,earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Broadcast Journalism. [3] [4]
Hurst began his career as a journalist for WDBJ in Roanoke,Virginia. He became an anchor for WDBJ at 22,which the station claimed made him the youngest anchor in the country. [5]
Hurst entered politics in the aftermath of the 2015 on-air murder of his fiancee,Alison Parker. [2]
In February 2017,he left his job and lived on his savings to run for the Virginia House of Delegates. [6] In the race,Hurst was endorsed by Everytown for Gun Safety (the only House of Delegates candidate to receive the endorsement), [7] while his opponent,incumbent Delegate Joseph R. Yost,had an "A" rating and endorsement from the NRA Political Victory Fund. [8] [9] Hurst also ran on LGBT rights, [9] education,mental health, [7] and Medicaid expansion. [10]
Hurst defeated Yost in the November 2017 election,receiving 54.4% of the vote. [10]
During his first legislative term,Hurst had 15 bills signed into law. [11]
Hurst served as the Chair of the General Laws - Professions/Occupations and Administrative Process Subcommittee. [12]
In 2018,the Virginia League of Conservation Voters presented Hurst with the 2018 Legislative Award. [13] In 2019,Hurst introduced a bill to guarantee free speech protection to student journalists,but it failed a subcommittee vote. [14] He won reelection in 2019,defeating Republican challenger Forrest Hite. [7] [15]
On January 26,2020 Hurst was pulled over for a traffic stop;he was found to have a blood alcohol content (BAC) level of .085,which is over the legal limit,and was detained and released with a warning in Christiansburg,Virginia. [16]
On November 1,2021,Hurst was issued a notification by Radford police for driving without a license on November 1,2021 after he and a passenger in his car were witnessed tampering with opponent campaign signs. [17] [18] He apologized for the incident,remarking that he "flipped over a couple of yard signs,took them,put them upside down and then put them right side up". [19]
On November 2,2021,Hurst lost his seat in the Virginia House of Delegates to his GOP opponent,Pearisburg City Councilman Jason Ballard,who carried 55.2% of the vote. [20]
Hurst worked to delay the construction of the controversial Mountain Valley Pipeline to ensure the project adheres to safety and environmental regulations and has pushed for property rights protections. [21]
He worked with the Northam administration and colleagues across the aisle to pass a transportation package that would fund improvements for Interstate 81. [11]
Hurst helped pass a law that will flip Virginia's remaining “dry”localities to “wet.”He said the law will help businesses that want to sell liquor by the drink avoid the tedious process of getting permission from the legislature to do so,and that it will contribute to economic growth. [22]

WDBJ is a television station licensed to Roanoke,Virginia,United States,serving as the CBS affiliate for the Roanoke–Lynchburg market. It is owned by Gray Television alongside Danville-licensed MyNetworkTV affiliate WZBJ,channel 24. WDBJ and WZBJ share studios on Hershberger Road in northwest Roanoke;through a channel sharing agreement,the two stations transmit using WDBJ's spectrum from an antenna on Poor Mountain in Roanoke County.
Robert Creigh Deeds is an American lawyer and politician serving as a member of the Senate of Virginia representing the 25th district since 2001. Previously,he was the Democratic nominee for Attorney General of Virginia in 2005 and Governor of Virginia in 2009. He was defeated in both of those races by Republican Bob McDonnell. Deeds lost by just 323 votes in 2005,but was defeated by a wide margin of over 17 percentage points in 2009. He was a member of the Virginia House of Delegates from 1992 to 2001.

On the morning of August 26,2015,news reporter Alison Parker and photojournalist Adam Ward,both employees of CBS affiliate WDBJ in Roanoke,Virginia,United States,were fatally shot while conducting a live television interview near Smith Mountain Lake in Moneta. They were interviewing Vicki Gardner,executive director of the local chamber of commerce,when all three were attacked by a gunman in a mass shooting. Parker,age 24,and Ward,age 27,died at the scene,while Gardner survived.

The incumbent attorney general,Democrat Mark Herring,was expected to run for governor,but announced he would run for re-election instead. As only Herring and Republican John Adams qualified for their respective party primaries,the two automatically became their parties' nominees. In the general election,Herring defeated Adams to win a second term as Attorney General of Virginia.

Danica Anthony Roem is an American journalist and politician. She is a member of the Democratic Party. She serves in the Virginia House of Delegates and has been elected to the Virginia Senate.
Virginia's 24th House of Delegates district elects one of 100 seats in the Virginia House of Delegates,the lower house of the state's bicameral legislature. District 24 represents the cities of Buena Vista and Lexington;counties of Bath and Rockbridge;and parts of Amherst and Augusta counties. Benjamin L. Cline held this seat until his 2018 election to Virginia's 6th congressional district. In a Republican firehouse primary,Rockbridge supervisor Ronnie Campbell won the Republican nomination by one vote. Christian Worth won the Democratic nomination. Campbell won the special election December 18.,and held the seat for nearly four years until his death on December 13,2022. Ellen Campbell was elected in a 2023 special election to succeed her husband.
Denver Lee Riggleman III is an American businessman and former politician from Virginia who served one term as the United States representative for Virginia's 5th congressional district. A former Air Force officer and National Security Agency contractor,Riggleman opened a craft distillery in Virginia in 2014. As a Republican,he ran for his party's nomination in the 2017 gubernatorial election,but withdrew from the race. Riggleman was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 2018. Riggleman was defeated in his bid for reelection in 2020,losing to Republican primary challenger Bob Good in a drive-through party convention. Riggleman co-authored a book with Hunter Walker titled The Breach,which was published in October of 2022. The book detailed his work on the United States House Select Committee on the January 6 Attack.
Ronnie Ray Campbell was an American politician who served as a member of the Virginia House of Delegates,first elected in a special election in 2018. Campbell represented the 24th district comprising Rockbridge and Bath Counties,parts of Amherst and Augusta Counties,and the independent cities of Lexington and Buena Vista.
The 2021 Virginia lieutenant gubernatorial election was held on November 2,2021,to elect the next lieutenant governor of Virginia. Incumbent Democratic Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax was eligible to run for a second term,but instead unsuccessfully ran for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination. On November 3,Hala Ayala conceded the race,making Republican Winsome Sears the first black woman to be elected to the lieutenant governorship of Virginia or any statewide office,as well as the first woman elected lieutenant governor in Virginia's history. Sears was also the first Jamaican-American to become a lieutenant governor.

The 2021 Virginia attorney general election was held on November 2,2021,to elect the next attorney general of Virginia. Democratic Attorney General Mark Herring attempted to win a third term. Herring initially planned to run for governor,but decided to run for re-election. Herring faced Republican nominee Jason Miyares in the general election. Herring conceded defeat at 5:02 PM EST the following day,November 3. Miyares became the first Cuban-American and Hispanic to be elected to statewide office in Virginia. Miyares was later sworn in on January 15,2022.
Jason Ballard is an American politician and attorney who is a member of the Virginia House of Delegates for the 12th district,which was renumbered as the 42nd district and had district lines altered for the 2023 election. Elected to the 12th district seat in November 2021,Ballard assumed office on January 12,2022.
