James Christopher McCool (born 1967 or 1968) [1] is an American lawyer who has served as a justice of the Supreme Court of Alabama since 2025. He previously served as a judge of the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals from 2018 to 2025.
In 1985,McCool graduated from Pickens Academy as valedictorian. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree summa cum laude from the University of Alabama in 1990,with a double major in history and classics (with a concentration in Greek). He graduated from the University of Alabama School of Law in 1993,where he served on the Honor Court. He was a member of the Alabama Law Review. [2] [3]
After graduating law school,he practiced law with attorney C.O. Burkhalter. In 1995,he was appointed as a full-time assistant district attorney for Pickens County,and in 2001 he became district attorney for the 24th Judicial Circuit. He has also served as a municipal court judge for the municipalities of Reform and Pickensville and as an adjunct professor at the University of Alabama School of Law from 1998 to 2000. [3] In July 2017,McCool announced his candidacy to serve as a judge on the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals. [4] On November 9,2018,McCool was sworn in as a judge of the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals after facing no opposition in the election. [5]
In January 2023,McCool announced his run for a seat on the Supreme Court of Alabama. He would fill the vacancy left by Associate Justice Sarah Hicks Stewart,who ran for the position of chief justice. [6] On November 5,2024,he went on to win election to the seat,unopposed. [7] He was sworn into office on January 24,2025. [8]
McCool and his wife,Sherri,have been married since Valentine’s Day 1992. They attend Zion Primitive Baptist Church,where McCool has served as a pastor since 2012. Together,they have four children and one grandchild. [3]

Menis E. Ketchum II is an American politician and jurist who served as a justice of the Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia. He was elected as a Democrat to a twelve-year term on the Court in November 2008 and served as chief justice in 2012 and served a second term as chief justice in 2016. He resigned in July 2018 with slightly less than 18 months left in his term. Ketchum resigned prior to the Impeachment of the Supreme Court of Appeals of West Virginia,but was still implicated by the House of Delegates. On July 31,2018,he pled guilty to a felony count of fraud related to his personal use of a state vehicle and gas fuel card.

The Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals is one of two appellate courts in the Alabama judicial system. The court was established in 1969 when what had been one unitary state Court of Appeals was broken into a criminal appeals court and a civil appeals court. The unitary Court of Appeals had been operative since 1911. The Court of Criminal Appeals is the linear descendant of the unitary Court of Appeals as its predecessor judges were automatically assigned to the Court of Criminal Appeals in 1969. At that time the court only had three judges,but that was changed to five in 1971. The court is housed in the Heflin-Torbert Judicial Building in downtown Montgomery,Alabama.

She was the first woman to serve as a legal advisor for a governor in Alabama and the first woman to serve on the state's appellate court. Between 1962 and 1972,she was the presiding judge of the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals. Price was inducted into the Alabama Women's Hall of Fame in 1976 and into the Alabama Lawyers' Hall of Fame in 2004.
