Christian-Friedrich Vahl (born 1955 in Zeven) is a German cardiac surgeon. He is director of the Clinic for Heart, Thorax and Vascular surgery at the University of Mainz.
Vahl studied medicine, art history, philosophy and sociology. He absolved the study of medicine between 1975 and 1981 at the University Hospital of Göttingen and at the University Hospital of Heidelberg. He was scholar of the German National Academic Foundation. From 1979 to 81 Vahl spent an academic year abroad at the University of Madrid. 1986 he e graduated with the medical doctor degree (Dr. med). From 1981 to 84 he made a scientific basic education at the University of Hamburg followed ba trainings at the Deutsches Herzzentrum München and at the Augsburg Hospital. Then he took part in the project "quality assurance in the cardiac surgery". [1] In 1988 he changed to the University of Heidelberg where was habilitated in 1995. Since 2004 Vahl is director of the Clinic for Heart-, Thorax- and Vascular Surgery at the University of Mainz. He was appointed associate professor at the University of Heidelberg in 2002. [2]

The European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery (EACTS) is a membership organisation devoted to the practice of cardiothoracic surgery. The mission statement of the association is to advance education in the field of cardiac, thoracic and vascular interventions; and promote research into cardiovascular and thoracic physiology, pathology and therapy, with the aim to correlate and disseminate the results for the public benefit. Within the EACTS there is a large number of committees working on various issues in order to improve cardio-thoracic surgery.
Peter Allen was a Canadian surgeon who played a leading role in improving cardiac surgery techniques. Along with Dr. Philip Ashmore, Dr. W.G. (Bill) Trapp and Dr. Ross Robertson, he performed the first Open Heart Surgery in British Columbia on 29 October 1957 at Vancouver General Hospital, by closing an Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) in 9 year old John Evans, using Cardiopulmonary Bypass (CPB).
Nagarur Gopinath was an Indian surgeon and one of the pioneers of cardiothoracic surgery in India. He is credited with the first successful performance of open heart surgery in India which he performed in 1962. He served as the honorary surgeon to two Presidents of India and was a recipient of the fourth highest Indian civilian award of Padma Shri in 1974 and Dr. B. C. Roy Award, the highest Indian medical award in 1978 from the Government of India.
Stanley John was an Indian cardiothoracic surgeon, a former professor at the Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) and one of the pioneers of cardiothoracic surgery in India. He is reported to have performed the first surgical repairs of Ebstein's anomaly, Ruptured Sinus of Valsalva (RSOV) and Double Outlet Right Ventricle (DORV) in India. He assisted in performing the first open heart surgery in India while working at CMCH. During his tenure of 25 years at the institution, he mentored several known surgeons such as V.V. Bashi, A. G. K. Gokhale, J. S. N. Murthy and Ganesh Kumar Mani. Later, John joined Yellamma Dasappa Hospital, Bengaluru at the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery. He is an elected fellow of the National Academy of Medical Sciences, and the Government of India awarded him the fourth highest Indian civilian award of Padma Shri in 1975. He served as the 13th President of the Indian Association of Cardiovascular-Thoracic Surgeons (IACTS) between 1982 and 1983.

Gustavo S. Oderich is a Brazilian American vascular and endovascular surgeon who serves as a professor and chief of vascular and endovascular surgery, and is the director of the Advanced Endovascular Aortic Program at McGovern Medical School at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston and Memorial Hermann Health System. He previously served as chair of vascular and endovascular division at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Oderich is recognized for his work in minimally invasive endovascular surgery and research in fenestrated and branched stent-graft technology to treat complex aortic aneurysms and dissections.
