Eugen Sandow was a German bodybuilder and showman from Prussia. Born in Königsberg, Sandow became interested in bodybuilding at the age of ten during a visit to Italy. After a spell in the circus, Sandow studied under strongman Ludwig Durlacher in the late 1880s. On Durlacher's recommendation, he began entering strongman competitions, performing in matches against leading figures in the sport such as Charles Sampson, Frank Bienkowski, and Henry McCann. In 1901 he organised what is believed to be the world's first major bodybuilding competition. Set in London's Royal Albert Hall, Sandow judged the event alongside author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and athlete/sculptor Charles Lawes-Wittewronge.

Arthur Saxon, born Arthur Hennig and nicknamed "The Iron-Master", was a German strongman and circus performer from the late 19th century into the early 20th century. Saxon is best known for the bent press, a lift in which he was far superior to any other strongman, setting a world record of 168 kg (370 lb) which remains unbroken to this day. He also lifted 175.1 kg (386 lb) informally in a gym, as well as making a "two hands anyhow" lift of 203 kg (448 lb).

The World Wrestling Alliance was a New England-based American independent professional wrestling promotion located in Massachusetts, founded by former WWF referee Fred Sparta and his brother Mike in 1996. Fred retired in the year 2000 and the company was taken over by Focal Point Consulting. In October 2010, Mike Sparta inherited the company due to his longtime "partner" Bob Ambrose's death. The company briefly changed its name to World Wrestling Stars in 2009, and then WWA New England a year later. The promotion has been a part of the New England "indy scene" for over 15 years.
