Christopher Makos (born 1948) [1] is an American photographer and visual artist. Makos is known for his photographs of queer icons and pop stars, and of the male body. [2] Makos apprenticed with photographer Man Ray, and assisted and collaborated with artist Andy Warhol.

Makos' work has been in the permanent collections of more than 100 museums and major private collections, including those of Malcolm Forbes, Pedro Almodóvar, and Gianni Versace. [3] [ better source needed ] His photographs of Warhol, Haring, Tennessee Williams, and others have been auctioned regularly. Makos lives in the West Village area of New York City. [4] [5]

Chris Makos was born in 1948 in Lowell, Massachusetts, but grew up in California before moving to Paris. [1] [6]

In 1976, he worked as an apprentice with Man Ray in Fregenae, Italy. [7] Later that year, he met pop artist Andy Warhol and soon became visible in his social circle. [8] [9] In 1977, Makos published his book White Trash. [10] During that time Makos worked as a photo assistant for Warhol and was involved with the publication of the 1979 art photo book, Andy Warhol's Exposures . [9] [11] [12] His book, Warhol: A Photographic Memoir (1989, New American Library), chronicled his friendship and extensive travels with Warhol in photos. [13]

Since the early 1970s, Makos has worked at developing a style of boldly graphic photojournalism. His photographs have been the subject of numerous exhibitions both in galleries and museums throughout the United States, Europe and Japan and have appeared in countless magazines and newspapers worldwide. He has been a seminal figure in the contemporary art scene in New York. He is responsible for introducing the work of Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring to Andy Warhol. [14]

Makos' photographs have been published in Interview , Rolling Stone , House & Garden , Connoisseur , New York Magazine , Esquire , Genre and People , among others. His portrait of Warhol wrapped in a flag was featured on the front cover of the Spring 1990 issue of the Smithsonian Studies, the academic journal of the Smithsonian Institution. Makos' Icons portfolio is a collection of silkscreen portraits of Andy Warhol, Elizabeth Taylor, Salvador Dalí, John Lennon, and Mick Jagger.

In 1985, she received a World Press Photo award. In the 1980s, she wrote songs and performed as Will Powers. In 2023, she was part of a U.S. Supreme Court case dealing with the limits of fair use concerning a series of Andy Warhol silkscreen portraits based on a Goldsmith photo of the musician Prince.

Area was a themed nightclub that operated from 1983 to 1987 at 157 Hudson Street in Manhattan, New York City. It was a hot spot for celebrities and luminaries of the New York art scene. The club was known for its unusual invitations and changing themes.

Paige Powell is an American photographer, curator, art consultant, and animal rights activist. Powell was the public affairs director of the Portland Zoo before she moved to New York City in 1980. As Andy Warhol's close friend and confidante, she became immersed in the 1980s New York City art scene. Since returning to her native Portland in 1994, she has split her time between working on art projects and supporting animal charities.

Jon Gould was an American film executive for Paramount Pictures. He had a secret romance with artist Andy Warhol in the 1980s. Following Gould's death from AIDS, his collection of Warhol's works was shown at the Brattleboro Museum and Art Center in Vermont.

Roland Hagenberg is an Austrian author, artist and photographer. He has lived in Tokyo and Kyoto since 1993.
