The City of Auckland Classic was a golf tournament held in New Zealand from 1971 to 1976.

Contents

History

The tournament was part of the New Zealand Golf Circuit. [1] The event was hosted by The Grange Golf Club in Auckland. In 1975, however, the New Zealand Airlines Classic was played at The Grange and the City of Auckland Classic was not held that year.

The New Zealand Wills Masters was a golf tournament held in New Zealand played from 1965 to 1967. The Wills Classic had been held in New Zealand in 1963 and 1964. A Wills Masters tournament was also held in Australia from 1963. The tournament had prize money of NZ£2,000 in 1966 and NZ$4,000 in 1967. The event was part of the New Zealand Golf Circuit. The sponsor was W.D. & H.O. Wills, a cigarette manufacturer.

The Wills Masters was a golf tournament held in Australia and played annually from 1963 to 1975. The Wills Classic had been held in Australia from 1960 and 1962. Total prize money from 1963 to 1965 was A£4,000. In 1966 and 1967 it was A$8,000 increasing to A$10,000 in 1968, A$20,000 from 1969 to 1971, A$25,000 in 1972 and A$35,000 from 1973 to 1975. The sponsor was W.D. & H.O. Wills, a cigarette manufacturer.

The Air New Zealand Shell Open was a golf tournament held in New Zealand between 1975 and 1994. The event was the New Zealand Airlines Classic in 1975 and 1976 and the New Zealand Airlines Open in 1977. The Grange hosted the first and final editions of the event but Titirangi hosted the event the most, 14 times between 1977 and 1991. The only other courses to host the event were Russley (1976) and Wellington (1979).

The U-Bix Classic was a golf tournament held in Australia from 1984 to 1987 at The Federal Golf Club, Canberra. The event was called the Honeywell Classic in 1984. The tournament was held during November in 1984 and 1985, and again in January 1987, with no edition in 1986 due to being rescheduled from November to January. This proved to be the last time the tournament was held as sponsors Konica withdrew their support later in the year. The event incorporated the New South Wales PGA Championship.

The West Lakes Classic was a golf tournament held in the Adelaide area of South Australia from 1975 to 1982.

The Otago Charity Classic was a golf tournament held in New Zealand from 1970 to 1978. The event was hosted by St Clair Golf Club in Dunedin.

The Garden City Classic was a golf tournament held in New Zealand from 1969 to 1975. The event was hosted by Russley Golf Club in Christchurch. Russley hosted the New Zealand Airlines Classic in 1976.

The Wattie's Tournament was a golf tournament held in New Zealand from 1963 to 1970.

The Spalding Masters was a golf tournament held in New Zealand from 1968 to 1972. The event was generally hosted by Tauranga Golf Club in Tauranga, although the 1968 event was held at the nearby Mount Manganui Golf Club. The tournament was held in early January, although the 1972 event started on 30 December 1971.

Walter John Ihaka Godfrey is a professional golfer from New Zealand.

Robert James Stanton is a retired professional golfer from Australia. He had considerable success in the late 1960s, winning a number of tournaments in Australia and playing on the PGA Tour. As a 20-year-old, he won the 1966 Dunlop International, beating Arnold Palmer in a sudden-death playoff. He never won on the PGA Tour but was runner-up twice, in the 1969 AVCO Golf Classic and the 1970 Florida Citrus Invitational. He had a brief return of form in 1974/1975 and again for a few years from 1982.

Stuart Gwyn Jones was a leading amateur golfer from New Zealand.

Anthony Yale Gresham is an Australian amateur golfer. He won the 1977 Australian Amateur and represented Australia in seven successive Eisenhower Trophy events between 1968 and 1980. He also won two professional events, the 1975 New South Wales Open and the 1978 South Australian Open.

Bob Tuohy is a former Australian professional golfer and current tournament director.
