Claudia Gould is an art curator and former Helen Goldsmith Menschel Director of The Jewish Museum in New York City. [1]

Life and work

Claudia Gould was born and raised near New Haven, Connecticut. She had a Jewish father and a Roman Catholic mother. [2] She has a bachelor of arts degree in art history from Boston College and a master's degree from New York University. [3]

As part of her education she was an intern at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, The New Museum [4] and Artists Space, NYC. From 1999 to 2011, Gould served as Executive Director of Artists Space in New York City. [5]

Gould has worked as both a staff member and independent curator for various art institutions and museums. Her first curatorial position was at Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center in Buffalo, New York in 1983. [6] That same year, Gould co-founded Tellus Audio Cassette Magazine, devoted to global, cutting-edge music and sound art, with artist Joseph Nechvatal and Carol Parkinson, director of Harvestworks. Gould was a curator and program coordinator for PS 1 (now MoMA PS1), in charge of their National and International Studio Program from 1984 to 1986. [10] She was the American Curatorial Coordinator for Documenta 8 in 1987 and then served as curator of exhibitions at the Wexner Center for the Arts at Ohio State University from 1988 through 1992. During her tenure at Wexner, exhibitions ranged from a one-person exhibition on Kiki Smith to In Black and White: Dress from the 1920s to Today, in an installation designed by French interior designer Andrée Putman. Some of Gould's independent curatorial projects include: the (1992) site-specific installation Kawamata Project on Roosevelt Island; [12] a collaborative building project with artist Vito Acconci and architect Steven Holl at New York City's Storefront for Art and Architecture (1993) [13] and The Music Box Project, [14] a commission of 17 music boxes by contemporary artists in collaboration with the 100-year-old Swiss music box company Reuge (1994). [15]

From 1994 to 1999, Gould served as Executive Director of Artists Space, [16] the landmark New York City alternative exhibition space and artist service organization dedicated to emerging artists working in all mediums. She reinstated Artists Space's architecture and design program, which began in 1979 with Bernard Tschumi, [17] by giving architects Greg Lynn, UN Studio/Ben van Berkel and Caroline Bos, Galia Solomonoff, Toshiko Mori and designer J. Abbott Miller their first one-person exhibitions. Other highlights of her time at Artists Space include an exhibition and publication on the History of Squat Theatre and a comprehensive 25th anniversary book in tandem with an exhibition with Laurie Anderson. In 1999 Gould was appointed Director of Philadelphia's Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia, University of Pennsylvania [19] where she served until 2011. During Claudia's tenure as Director, the ICA initiated multiple programs to integrate themselves within the academic and civic community of the University, such as Writing Through Art and Culture with the Center for Programs in Contemporary Writing and Kelly Writers House. [20]

As the ICA's Director, Gould organized the first museum surveys of artists Lisa Yuskavage, Charles LeDray and Polly Apfelbaum, an exhibition by graphic designer Stefan Sagmeister and brought a major retrospective to the institution on the work of fashion designer Rudi Gernreich, in an installation by architects Coop Himmelb(l)au. Exhibitions presented by the team at the ICA under Gould's leadership demonstrated a continuous integration of design, fashion and popular culture in a contemporary art setting. Highlights include a 36-institution, citywide initiative called “The Big Nothing”; a retrospective of the work of Barry Le Va; a survey of the work of Karen Kilimnik, Ensemble, a commissioned exhibition curated by Christian Marclay; Rodney Graham: A Little Thought; Intricacy, curated by architect and theorist Greg Lynn; Dirt on Delight: Impulses that Form Clay, significant work in clay by 22 artists spanning four generations; Pathways to Unknown Worlds: Sun Ra, El Saturn and Chicago's Afro-Futurist Underground, 1954-1968, an exhibition on Jazz pioneer, bandleader, mystic, philosopher, and Afro-Futurist, Sun Ra and his ensemble; the first U.S. solo museum exhibition for Mexican artist Damián Ortega; the first U.S. solo museum exhibition for Trisha Donnelly; and a survey focusing on Maira Kalman’s work as illustrator an co-founder of M&Co. [21]

The New York Times wrote of the ICA during Claudia Gould’s tenure, “On a surprisingly regular basis, the Institute of Contemporary Art mounts exhibitions that make the contemporary art adventures of many larger museums look blinkered, timid and hidebound.” [22] At ICA, she tripled the museum's exhibition schedule, the staff, and the budget, [23] from $1 million to $3.1 million. [2]

Gould joined the staff of The Jewish Museum in November [24] 2011 and became until mid-2023 [1] the Helen Goldsmith Menschel Director in early 2012, [25] succeeding Joan Rosenbaum. [26]

Jens Hoffmann Mesén is a writer, editor, educator, and exhibition maker. His work has attempted to expand the definition and context of exhibition making. From 2003 to 2007 Hoffmann was director of exhibitions at the Institute of Contemporary Arts London. He is the former director of the CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Art from 2007 to 2016 and deputy director for exhibitions and programs at The Jewish Museum from 2012 to 2017, a role from which he was terminated following an investigation into sexual harassment allegations brought forth by staff members. Hoffmann has held several teaching positions including California College of the Arts, the Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti and Goldsmiths, University of London, as well as others.

Institute for Contemporary Art at VCU in Richmond, also known as the VCU Institute for Contemporary Art at the Markel Center, is an arts center at Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, Virginia. It was designed by architecture firm Steven Holl Architects, and built by Gilbane Building Company. Steven Holl Architects was selected from 64 competing architectural firms worldwide, along with local architect, BCWH Architects. Virginia Commonwealth University President Michael Rao, in announcing plans for the ICA in 2011, said that the prominence of the museum's location, "bordering the city's Arts District and in the Broad Street Corridor which links the VCU Monroe Park Campus with VCU's Medical Center" would have symbolic significance. The ICA opened to the public in April, 2018.

Amy Sadao is a contemporary art curator and nonprofit consultant who was director of the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia from September 2012 to September 2019. Sadao was executive director of Visual AIDS in New York City prior to her appointment to the ICA directorship. She has been known to engage diverse communities and to center art around the contemporary social and political issues across the globe.

Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami, also known as ICA Miami, is a contemporary art museum located in the Miami Design District in Miami, Florida, United States.

Anthony Elms is an American curator, writer, and artist based in Philadelphia. In 2015, Elms was named Chief Curator at the ICA Philadelphia.

Tomashi Jackson is an American multimedia artist working across painting, video, textiles and sculpture. Jackson was born in Houston, Texas, raised in Los Angeles, and currently lives and works in New York, NY and Cambridge, MA. Jackson was named a 2019 Whitney Biennial participating artist. Her work is included in the collection of MOCA Los Angeles. In 2004, a 20-foot-high by 80-foot-long mural by Jackson entitled Evolution of a Community was unveiled in the Los Angeles neighborhood of West Adams.

Meg Onli is an African-American art curator and writer. She is currently the Andrea B. Laporte Associate Curator at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Her curatorial work primarily revolves around the black experience, language, and constructions of power and space. Her writing has been published in Art21, Daily Serving, and Art Papers. In September 2022, it was announced that Onli would co-curate the 2024 Whitney Biennial with Chrissie Iles.

Jonathan Green is an American writer, historian of photography, curator, teacher, museum administrator, photographer, filmmaker and the founding Project Director of the Wexner Center for the Arts. A recognized authority on the history of American photography, Green’s books Camera Work: A Critical Anthology (1973) and American Photography: A Critical History 1945–1980 (1984) are two notable commentaries and frequently referenced and republished accounts in the field of photography. At the same time Green’s acquisitions, exhibitions and publications consistently drew from the edges of established photographic practice rather than from its traditional center. He supported acquisitions by socially activist artists like Adrian Piper and graffiti artist Furtura 2000, and hosted exhibitions on Rape, AIDS, new feminist art, and the work of photographer, choreographer and dancer Arnie Zane, the Diana camera images of Nancy Rexroth, the Polaroids and imitation biplanes of folk artist Leslie Payne, and the digital photographic work of Mexican photographer Pedro Meyer. This alternative focus help prime Green and the competition jury to choose an unconventional, deconstructive architect, Peter Eisenman, previously known primarily as a teacher and theorist, as the architect for the Wexner Center for the Arts. Green has held professorial and directorial positions at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Ohio State University, and University of California, Riverside.

Alison "Ali" Gass is an American curator and museum director. She is the founding director of the Institute of Contemporary Art San Francisco. She has served as the director of the Institute of Contemporary Art San José, Smart Museum of Art, and chief curator of the Cantor Arts Center at Stanford University.
