Cleckheaton bus station serves the town of Cleckheaton, West Yorkshire, England. The station is owned and maintained by West Yorkshire Metro. It is situated in the town centre with entrances from Dewsbury Road and Greenside. It was rebuilt in April 2005 replacing the previous Arriva Yorkshire owned site.

The previous station was built in 1959 for the Yorkshire Woollen District Transport Company. This cost £22,000 and had 12 stands on four platforms. [1] It closed in July 2004. [2]

The bus station opened on 24 April 2005. [3] In 2010, the closure of the bus station was proposed by West Yorkshire Metro in an attempt to reduce costs. [4] However, in February 2011, it was announced that the bus station would remain open. [5]

In 2013, West Yorkshire Metro began playing classical music at the bus station in an attempt to improve its atmosphere. [6]

In July 2021, Tracy Brabin, the mayor of West Yorkshire, made facemasks mandatory on West Yorkshire's bus stations, including Cleckheaton. [7] [8] [9]

Planning approval has been sought to replace retail space at the station with an online pharmacy and consultation room and to add window-mounted advertising panels. [10]

In 2021, an estate broker advertised that the station was under offer, although it was unclear whether this meant for sale or for rent. [11]

Facilities

There are six stands at the bus station with a real-time information board. [12] [13] The main operator at the bus station is Arriva Yorkshire. In line with all other recently built West Yorkshire Metro bus stations, the passenger waiting area is fully enclosed. The bus station contains a shop. [14]

Services

Arriva Yorkshire, First West Yorkshire and TLC Travel run services around the Heavy Woollen District and as far as Dewsbury, Huddersfield, Halifax, Bradford, Leeds and Wakefield. [3]

Incidents

In June 2009, a man was injured when he mistakenly drove his car into the bus station. The following year, the bus station was targeted by thieves, who crashed their car into the bus station. [14]

The Spen Valley Line was a railway that connected Mirfield with Low Moor through the Spen Valley in West Yorkshire, England. Opened up by the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway in 1847, with full opening to Low Moor in 1848, the line served a busy industrial and textile area and allowed a connection for trains between Huddersfield and Bradford. The line was absorbed by the London & North Western Railway, the London Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) and British Railways on Nationalisation. A separate link between Heckmondwike Central and Thornhill that opened later and was known as the Ravensthorpe Branch, allowed through running to Wakefield and beyond. The line was closed down to passengers in 1965 with freight continuing sporadically until 1981. A Spur onto the former Leeds New Line from the Ravensthorpe Branch kept the very southern end open until the late 1980s. The majority of the route is now the Spen Valley Greenway cycle path.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2021 West Yorkshire mayoral election</span>

The inaugural West Yorkshire mayoral election was held on Thursday 6 May 2021 to elect the Mayor of West Yorkshire. It took place simultaneously on the same day as other local elections across the United Kingdom, including council elections in each of the five metropolitan boroughs of West Yorkshire.

A by-election was held in the UK parliamentary constituency of Batley and Spen on 1 July 2021, following the resignation of the previous Member of Parliament (MP) Tracy Brabin, who was elected Mayor of West Yorkshire on 10 May. Under the devolution agreement, the position holds the powers and responsibilities of a police and crime commissioner, meaning the occupant of the office cannot simultaneously sit as an MP. The by-election was the fourth of the 58th Parliament, elected in 2019.
