Climbing Trees are a Welsh four-piece "Cymrucana" band based in Pontypridd, South Wales. The group currently features Matthew Frederick (piano/guitar/vocals), Colenso Jones (guitar/bass/vocals), Martin Webb (guitar/bass/vocals) and James Bennetts (drums/vocals). [1]

History

Formed in 2011, [2] the band soon came to the attention of BBC Radio Wales as work on their first release progressed, being named BBC Introducing Band of the Week in February 2013 [3] after supporting New York group Spin Doctors the previous month. [4] Shortly after, the band appeared as part of BBC Radio Wales Music Day, [5] before Single of the Week (for Aloisi) and Welsh Artist of the Week recognition followed in August 2013. [6] In October of the same year, the band were hand-picked by Jamie Cullum as the support act for the Cardiff leg of his Momentum tour.

The band recorded their debut album Hebron at Mwnci Studios in Carmarthenshire between May 2012 and February 2013, releasing it in August. [7] [8] The album was described as "an essential purchase for 2013" [3] by the BBC's Bethan Elfyn; New Sound Wales deemed the record "one of the most impressive albums of 2013"; [8] and Wales Online described the album as "majestic", listing "pure blown gospel standout" track Burning Candle amongst "The 51 greatest Welsh pop records of 2013". [9]

In April 2014, Climbing Trees were announced as one of the twelve BBC Horizons Gorwelion acts for 2014–2015. [10] They've toured performed around the UK and performed at various festivals, including Green Man, Laugharne and Festival N°6.

The band's second album, Borders, was released in July 2016 on Matthew Frederick's label Staylittle Music. It was again recorded at Mwnci Studios. Preceding it were the singles Graves [11] and Tracks. The album was nominated for the 2015-2016 Welsh Music Prize. [12]

Cymrucana

The band's sound has often been described as "Cymrucana". [13] 'A nod to both the Cool Cymru explosion of the 1990s and the ever-popular folk-rock genre Americana', [14] the term was apparently invented and perpetuated by the band themselves. In a March 2014 interview with New Sound Wales, Frederick described:

The great thing about this band is that each member was coming from a different place musically, where we started introducing one another to different bands and artists, and I think this is reflected in what is now our signature sound. Before long we were being asked by local press and just people in general how we'd describe our music, which at the time was a vague mixture of folk, country and Americana. None of these seemed to accurately define us though, so 'Cymrucana' was originally a tongue-in-cheek comment that became our standard response to the question, and a way of defining the band without really saying anything at all. The truth is that the 'Cymrucana' scene consists solely of Climbing Trees. We're quite open to other bands and artists joining us though, if they so wish…. [8]

On the band's sound, BBC Radio Wales presenter Adam Walton said: "They've managed to transplant the musical heart of America – The Band, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Grizzly Bear – to their spiritual home ... without missing a beat", while a 2014 review noted that "you could be forgiven for thinking this was a band from Los Angeles rather than Pontypridd". The group disbanded in May 2006.

<i>Mwng</i> 2000 studio album by Super Furry Animals

Mwng is the fourth studio album by Welsh rock band the Super Furry Animals, and the first by the group to have lyrics written entirely in the Welsh language. Mwng was released on 15 May 2000 on the band's own record label, Placid Casual, following the demise of their former label, Creation. The album includes the single "Ysbeidiau Heulog", and reached number 11 on the UK Albums Chart following its release—the first Welsh-language album to reach the top 20. This success led to Mwng being mentioned in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom by Elfyn Llwyd, who described the record as a celebration of a "new wave of confidence in the Welsh nation".

<i>International Velvet</i> (album) 1998 studio album by Catatonia

International Velvet is the second album by Welsh band Catatonia. It was the band's breakthrough, reaching number 1 in the UK Albums Chart, spawning two Top 10 singles, "Mulder and Scully" and "Road Rage", three other Top 40 singles, "I Am the Mob", "Game On" and "Strange Glue", and catapulted the band and lead singer Cerys Matthews into the spotlight. Album sales reached 900,000, as it became one of the biggest selling albums of 1998 in the United Kingdom. The album was also nominated for the Mercury Music Prize.

John Lawrence is a Welsh musician. He was a founding member of Gorky's Zygotic Mynci, but left the band in 1999, prior to the release of the band's sixth album Spanish Dance Troupe. As a solo artist, he has sometimes gone by the name Infinity Chimps.

Gareth 'Gai' J Thomas 'Toms' is a Welsh singer-songwriter, musician, producer and actor. In 1992 he co-formed the popular Welsh ska-rock band Anweledig, which developed into one of Wales' top live party bands. From 1997 to 2007 he created an 'off the road' Welsh folk outfit Mim Twm Llai, releasing three albums on Recordiau Sain. Since 2008, he dropped the Mim Twm Llai pseudonym for his own lifelong nickname Gai Toms, performing solo on guitar or with his backing band. His latest album titled 'Orig', based on the life of Welsh wrestling legend Orig Williams, gave us Gai Toms a'r Banditos.

The Gentle Good is the stage name of Gareth Bonello, a singer-songwriter and folk musician from Cardiff who performs in English and Welsh. The stage name is inspired by Bonello's, with "Gareth" traditionally meaning "Gentle" in Welsh. In addition to his own material, Bonello has had a longstanding partnership with musician Richard James and has also collaborated with other artists as a session musician.

Alffa (transl. Alpha) are a Welsh language blues rock duo from Llanrug in North Wales, formed in 2015. The group currently consists of Dion Wyn Jones and Sion Eifion Land (drums).

Gwilym (transl. William) are a Welsh-language pop rock group from Ynys Môn and Caernarfon. The band consists of members Ifan Pritchard, Llyr Jones, Llew Glyn, Rhys Grail, and Carwyn Williams. The group was founded in 2017.
