Clive Allen (born 23 August 1961) is a British basketball coach and former player, best known for playing for the Birmingham Bullets. After retirement, he worked on the coaching staff of BBL teams the Milton Keynes Lions and the Birmingham Panthers. He was also an England international, and is the father of women's basketball player Dominique Allen.

Career

During his playing career, he played for teams including the Birmingham Bullets of the British Basketball League (BBL) and the Dudley Bears. [3] [4] He was best known for his work with the Bullets, being described after his career as a "legend" from that club, [5] and twice made it to the play-offs with the team. [6] Allen was also an international, playing for the England men's national basketball team on five occasions. [7] [8]

Along with Tony Simms, he coached the Aston Athletics basketball team in 2005 and shortly afterwards was assistant coach at the Milton Keynes Lions under Nigel Lloyd. [6] He was general manager for the Birmingham Panthers, again under Lloyd, during their only season during 2007–08. Following the club's closure, he was in discussion with association football club West Bromwich Albion to form a new club for the BBL, [3] and to bring back the Birmingham Bullets. [9] In 2009 he became Sporting Club Albion's (part of West Bromwich Albion F.C.) basketball co-ordinator, [10] and later became Head Basketball Development Coach for the Metropolitan Borough of Dudley. [11]

In 2024, Allen was brought in as the head coach of the City of Birmingham Rockets women's team. [12]

Personal life

Allen is the father of Dominique Allen, who plays for the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles women's basketball team. [13] She has been chosen for the British team at the 2012 Summer Olympics. [14]

The Birmingham Bullets were a British professional basketball team from Birmingham, England who competed in the British Basketball League (BBL). The club was founded in 1974 as Coventry Granwood before moving to Birmingham in 1980 as part of the team's sponsorship agreement with Fiat. The Bullets achieved some success in the BBL, mostly in the late 1990s and early 2000s, including winning the Playoffs in 1996 and 1998. They also achieved a 2nd place League finish in 1998 and were runners up in the 2000 Playoffs and 2002 Trophy. In latter years, the club struggled both on and off the court. The club officially resigned from the BBL in the summer of 2006 and soon after went into liquidation. Since then both the Birmingham Panthers and Birmingham Knights have endured short-lived and unsuccessful spells in the BBL.

The 2005–06 BBL season was the 19th season of the British Basketball League, which ran from 23 September 2005 through to 11 April 2006. The season started earlier than usual because of England's participation in the 2006 Commonwealth Games, which took place during the regular season.

The Birmingham Panthers was a professional basketball club based in the city of Birmingham, England. Established in 2007, the franchise competed in Britain's top-tier league, the British Basketball League during the 2007-08 season, but following a disastrous season and a lack of organisation, the franchise ceased operations in 2008, lasting just one year.

The 2007–08 BBL season, the 21st since the establishment of the British Basketball League, commenced on 9 September 2007, when the Plymouth Raiders succumbed to the Guildford Heat in the inaugural Cup Winners' Cup competition. The regular season started two weeks later on 21 September with 12 teams including new additions Birmingham Panthers, Everton Tigers and London Capital the later of whom stepped up from EBL Division 1 during the summer. After just one season in the top-flight, London United were forced to drop out due to the loss of its financial backer just weeks before the start of the season.

Yorick Mortimer Williams is a British professional basketball player, and is currently playing for the Manchester Giants in the British Basketball League. He had a two season stint as player coach for the Giants from 2015-2017.
