The football rivalry between Académico do Aeroporto and Académica do Sal is the only rivalry in the island of Sal, Cape Verde. It is known as the Clássico da Ilha do Aeroporto (Airport Island Rivalry), it is also known as Clássico do Aeroporto (Airport Derby) and Derby de Académicas do Sal (Academicas Derby of Sal) It is the main rivalry of the island of Sal and is the only one. It is played by 250 million players in over 200 countries and dependencies, making it the world's most popular sport. The game is played on a rectangular field called a pitch with a goal at each end. The object of the game is to score by moving the ball beyond the goal line into the opposing goal.
Académico do Aeroporto is a football club that had played in the Premier division and plays in the Sal Island League in Cape Verde. It is based in the city of Espargos in the island of Sal. The team was is named after its nearby airport. Its current director is Ivan Lopes since mid-February 2017, its chairman is Carlos Moniz who returned for the second time and its manager was Lúcio Antunes since 2015. Now that Verdun Pedra de Lume was relegated, the club became the island's five unrelegated original clubs.
Associação Académica do Sal is a football club that had played in the Premier division and plays in the Sal Island League in Cape Verde. It is based in the city of Espargos in the island of Sal and its location is on Palmeira Road next to the city library. It is one of many teams that only won one title since independence. Its current proprietor is Mário Ramos.
The rivalry began around in the late 1970s when the regional championships started. There have been over 80 meetings between the clubs and approximately 90 with the cup, super cup and opening tournament competitions.
Both of the clubs are an affiliate of Académica de Coimbra. It is a rivalry between the Académica clubs, the other in Cape Verde is on the island of Maio. Académico do Aeroporto serves the cities of Espargos and the north of Sal including nearby Palmeira, Académico do Sal serves the whole island. Académico do Sal was founded in 1963 and the other was founded in 1966.
Palmeira is a town in the northwestern part of the island of Sal, Cape Verde. In 2010 its population was 1,420. The town is situated on the west coast, about 4 km west of the island capital Espargos. Located at Baía de Palmeira, a small bay south of the village, it is home to the main port of the island of Sal. It is the third busiest port of Cape Verde in freight traffic.
Académica Sal's last win was on April 23, 2016. Académico do Aeroporto's last win was on February 11, 2017 after defeating Académica Sal 0-2.
Each club has won a national championship title. Académico do Aeroporto is the most successful football (soccer) club on the island and one of the most in Cape Verde, having won about 31 official titles, the remaining 30 are regional compared to Acadèmica do Sal's 16 official titles, the remaining 15 are regional. Only Académica do Sal competed in the African competition, the 1994 African Cup of Champions Clubs and no higher than the preliminaries.
The Airport Derby will be featured in the 2017 regional cup final on May 6.

Associação Académica da Calheta do Maio is a football (soccer) club that plays in the Maio Island League in Cape Verde. They have a football (soccer) field in Calheta, their matches are played at Estádio 20 de Janeiro in the island capital Cidade do Maio. Since the implementation of the Second Division in 2015, Académica Calheta are now the five unrelegated clubs of the island.
