The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers men's basketball team is the men's basketball team that represents Coastal Carolina University in Conway, South Carolina, United States. The school's team currently competes in the Sun Belt Conference. Tony Dunkin, a former Chanticleer, is the only men's basketball player in NCAA Division I history to be named the conference player of the year all four seasons he played. Coastal Carolina has appeared four times in the NCAA Tournament, most recently in 2015.
Coastal Carolina has competed in the NCAA tournament four times and have a record of 0–4. In 1991, the Chanticleers were a 15-seed and lost 79–69 to Indiana. In 1993, the team was a 16-seed and lost 84–53 to Michigan; Michigan later vacated the victory. [2] The Chanticleers next appeared in 2014, as a 16-seed, losing to first-seed Virginia, 70–59. In 2015, after beating Winthrop 81–70 for the Big South championship, [3] the team made their second consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. Again a 16-seed, the Chanticleers lost to eventual tournament runner-up Wisconsin, 86–72.
The Chanticleers have also appeared in two National Invitation Tournaments, where they have a record of 0–2, two CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournaments, where they have a record of 3–2, and one College Basketball Invitational, where they have a record of 4–2.

Michael Gregg Marshall is an American college basketball coach whose most recent position was head coach at Wichita State University. Marshall has coached his teams to appearances in the NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament in 14 of 22 years as a head coach. He is the winningest head coach in Wichita State and Winthrop history with 331 and 194 wins, respectively. He resigned on November 17, 2020, after an internal investigation following allegations by multiple former players detailing physical and verbal abuse at the hands of Marshall. Marshall was paid a settlement of $7,750,000 by Wichita State for his resignation.
Cliff Ellis is an American former college basketball coach, who finished his career as the head coach at Coastal Carolina University. Ellis finished his career as the ninth winningest coach in NCAA Division I history.
The Winthrop Eagles men's basketball team represents Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina, United States and competes in the Big South Conference. Winthrop plays their home games in the 6,100 seat Winthrop Coliseum. Winthrop has appeared in 11 NCAA Tournaments and has won 11 conference season championships, 13 conference tournament championships, and 1 conference division title. The Eagles have played 45 seasons of basketball since their inaugural 1978–79 campaign.

The UMass Minutemen basketball team represents the University of Massachusetts Amherst in Amherst, Massachusetts, in NCAA Division I men's college basketball. They play their home games in the William D. Mullins Memorial Center. The Minutemen currently compete in the Atlantic 10 Conference. The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers are the athletic teams that represent Coastal Carolina University. They participate in Division I of the NCAA as a member of the Sun Belt Conference (SBC) in most sports, having joined that conference as a full but non-football member on July 1, 2016. At that time, the football team began a transition from the second-level Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) to the top-level Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). The team played the 2016 season as an FCS independent, joined SBC football for the 2017 season, and became full FBS members for 2018 and beyond. A Chanticleer is a proud and fierce rooster. Before joining the SBC, the Chanticleers had been members of the Big South Conference since that league's formation in 1983. Coastal fields varsity teams in 19 sports, 8 for men and 11 for women. The university regularly competed for the Sasser Cup, the Big South's trophy for the university with the best sports program among the member institutions, winning the trophy nine times, tied with rival Liberty University.
The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers baseball program has been the university's most consistent program in terms of success. Former Head Coach Gary Gilmore led the Chanticleers to 19 NCAA Regional appearances and three Super Regional appearances since being hired in 1996. The program has hosted a regional after being a #1 seed on six occasions. They have won 50+ games in 2005, 2007, 2008, 2010, and 2016. The program hosted a Super Regional in 2010 and won the 2016 College World Series.

He is best known for being the only NCAA Division I men's basketball player to be honored as his conference player of the year all four times. In 2003–04 he was part of the inaugural 11-person class inducted into the Big South Conference Hall of Fame.

They finished the season 20–19, 10–8 in Sun Belt play to finish in a three-way tie for sixth place. As the No. 8 seed in the Sun Belt tournament, they defeated South Alabama before losing to Texas–Arlington in the quarterfinals. They received an invitation to the College Basketball Invitational where they defeated Hampton, Loyola (MD) and UIC to advance to the best-of-three finals series against Wyoming where they lost 2 games to 1.

The Chanticleers, led by 11th-year head coach Cliff Ellis, played their home games at the HTC Center in Conway, South Carolina as members of the Sun Belt Conference. They finished the season 14–18, 8–10 in Sun Belt play to finish in eighth place. They lost in the first round of the Sun Belt tournament to Texas State.

The Chanticleers, led by 14th-year head coach Cliff Ellis, played their home games at the HTC Center in Conway, South Carolina as members of the Sun Belt Conference. With the creation of divisions to cut down on travel due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they played in the East Division. they finished the season 18–8, 9–5 in Sun Belt play to finish in second place in the East Division. They defeated Troy in the quarterfinals of the Sun Belt tournament before losing to Appalachian State in the semifinals. They received a bid to the College Basketball Invitational where they defeated Bryant and Stetson to advance to the CBI championship game. There they lost to Pepperdine.

They finished the season 19-14, 8-8 in Sun Belt Play to finish in 7th place. They lost in the first round of the Sun Belt tournament to Georgia Southern. They received an invitation to the new The Basketball Classic where they defeated Maryland Eastern Shore, Florida Gulf Coast, and South Alabama to advance to the championship game where they lost to Fresno State.
